Entire Body System

  • Fatigue

There have also been reports of dizziness and fatigue. Women can experience problems with their monthly menstrual cycle if they have a reaction to this medication. [brighthub.com]

Nervous system disturbance: Blurred vision, dizziness, depression, nightmares, fatigue. Menstrual disturbance. Liver disturbance. Griseofulvin should not be taken in pregnancy as there is a slight risk of malformation of the fetus. [dermnetnz.org]

Side Effects of Griseofulvin Common side effects include: oral thrush nausea vomiting diarrhea headache fatigue dizziness insomnia mental confusion impairment of performance of routine activities This is not a complete list of griseofulvin side effects [rxwiki.com]

What to expect whilst taking griseofulvin and potential side effects Griseofulvin may cause the following side effects: Headache Upset stomach Vomiting Diarrhea or loose stools Thirst Fatigue Dizziness Faintness. [dermcoll.edu.au]

  • Acute Intermittent Porphyria

Griseofulvin may increase attacks of porphyria in patients with acute intermittent porphyria Proper Use of This Medicine Griseofulvin is best taken with or after meals, especially fatty ones (for example, whole milk or ice cream). [mold-survivor.com]

This may precipitate an attack of acute intermittent porphyria in susceptible patients. Pregnancy Due to possible teratogenic and abortifacient effects, use of griseofulvin during pregnancy is contraindicated. [pdr.net]

Gastrointestinal

  • Nausea

Griseofulvin interacts with alcohol rather like disulfiram (Antabuse) and can cause severe nausea and vomiting. [dermnetnz.org]

Common side effects may include: nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea; headache, tired feeling; sleep problems (insomnia); or itching, rash. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. [rxlist.com]

Common side effects include flushing, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Griseofulvin may cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. [rxwiki.com]

  • Abdominal Pain

New chapters cover common exanthems of childhood, acne, cardiac murmur evaluation, gastrointestinal parasites, gastroesophageal reflux disease, acute abdominal pain, diabetes, and vision and hearing abnormalities. [books.google.de]

Tell your doctor right away if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: yellowing eyes / skin, stomach / abdominal pain, persistent nausea / vomiting, dark urine, signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine, frothy urine [webmd.com]

Tiredness and joint pains. Tell your doctor if you get any of the following side effects: reactions to the sun. [drugs.com]

Liver, Gall & Pancreas

  • Jaundice

The occurrence of cholestatic jaundice in a patient receiving griseofulvin is described. The clinical manifestations, laboratory features, and pathological lesion of drug-induced hepatotoxicity are discussed. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

[…] fever, chills, flu symptoms, white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips; confusion, trouble with daily activities; liver problems --nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice [rxlist.com]

Musculoskeletal

  • Osteoporosis

Some issues such as osteoporosis and heart disease may also arise. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help restore the hormonal balance and reduce these symptoms and risks. [healthhub.sg]

Skin

  • Skin Rash

Skin rashes disappeared after discontinuation of griseofulvin and recurred on challenge with the drug. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

[…] pain, tingling, numbness in the hands or feet skin rash, redness, blistering, or peeling of skin sores or whites patches in the mouth unusually weak or tired yellowing of the eyes or skin Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report [carefirst.staywellsolutionsonline.com]

Stop using this medicine and check with your doctor right away if you or your child have blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin; red skin lesions; severe acne or skin rash; sores or ulcers on the skin; or fever or chills while you are using this [mayoclinic.org]

[…] burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling. [rxlist.com]

  • Photosensitivity

Two patients are described: one had a photosensitivity reaction to griseofulvin which precipitated discoid LE skin lesions, without any previous evidence of LE. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Since a photosensitivity reaction is occasionally associated with Griseofulvin therapy, patients should be warned to avoid exposure to intense natural or artificial sunlight. [drugsupdate.com]

Adverse Reactions: Oral thrush, GI distress, dizziness, confusion, peripheral neuritis, photosensitivity, granulocytopenia, leukopenia, proteinuria, lupus-like syndrome. How Supplied: Contact supplier [empr.com]

Rashes including urticaria, lupus erythematosus and photosensitivity (protect your skin from the sun). Urinary disturbance: frequency, bed wetting. Nervous system disturbance: Blurred vision, dizziness, depression, nightmares, fatigue. [dermnetnz.org]

  • Eczema

Rosacea, Acne, Shingles: Common Adult Skin Diseases Learn to spot and treat skin conditions commonly found in adults such as acne, eczema, shingles, psoriasis, rosacea, hives, cold... [medicinenet.com]

For example, tinea corporis can be confused with eczema, tinea capitis can be confused with alopecia areata, and onychomycosis can be confused with dystrophic toe-nails from repeated low-level trauma. [aafp.org]

CUTANEOUS T-CELL LYMPHOMA Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma is a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in which certain white blood cells called T-lymphocytes become cancerous and affect the skin. 1 Because CTCL can look like common skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema [stockwatch.com]

Neurologic

  • Headache

All patients did, however, report mild, transient gastrointestinal discomfort during the first 2 days of therapy, and one patient mentioned a mild headache. These remitted after approximately 2 to 4 days. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Headache, GI symptoms, and rashes also may occur. griseofulvin Microbiology An oral antifungal with an affinity for skin, used to treat dermatophytoses–eg, Epidermophyton spp, Microsporum spp, Trichophyton spp Adverse effects Headache, N&V, diarrhea, [medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com]

Common side effects may include: nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea; headache, tired feeling; sleep problems (insomnia); or itching, rash. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. [rxlist.com]

Workup

However, on laboratory workup, complement levels are normal. Management of serum sickness-like reaction includes replacing the offending agent and providing symptomatic relief. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Treatment

However, the optimal treatment duration for its use in the treatment of tinea capitis caused by Microsporum species has not yet been determined. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Etiology

We studied 153 consecutive patients of tinea capitis for clinical patterns, causative dermatophytic species, clinico-etiological correlation, and response to griseofulvin. Culture and sensitivity were done on all patients. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Epidemiology

However, varying dosage schedules, changes in epidemiology, and rising drug resistance are factors that hamper treatment in some cases. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Epidemiology and treatment of tinea capitis: ketoconazole vs. griseofulvin. Pediatr Infect Dis J. 1987; 6(1):46–49. 11. Ginsburg CM, Gan VN, Petruska M. [aafp.org]

Over the past 30 years, the reported incidence of tinea capitis has increased significantly, as travel and migration have been associated with changes in epidemiology and in distribution of the species of fungi that are likely to cause tinea capitis [doi.org]

Prevention

In conclusion, we postulate that DXA acid would be more effective to prevent liver damage induced by Gris. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

(via antibiotic antifungal agent ) Application (s): antifungal drug Any antifungal agent used to prevent or treat fungal infections in humans or animals. [ebi.ac.uk]

It doesn't kill fungal infections that are established in these areas, but instead prevents fungal cells from infecting new keratin that grows. It does this by preventing fungal cells from growing and multiplying. [netdoctor.co.uk]
