Pathologist
More than 90 preeminent surgical pathologists offer expert advice on the diagnostic evaluation of every type of specimen from every anatomic site. The Fourth Edition contains 3,494 full-color photographs, of which over 1,100 are new. [books.google.com]
In doubtful cases, therefore, a second opinion from a pathologist specializing in gastroenterology is decisive ( 8 ) (Box 1). [aerzteblatt.de]

The polyps were reviewed by 3 pathologists to confirm the diagnosis. Clinical information to confirm or refute a diagnosis of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) was collected. [thedoctorsdoctor.com]

Asymptomatic
Half of our screened group had rectal bleeding; others were asymptomatic. Colonoscopy, performed a mean of four times, identified polyps in all seven patients (mean age 28 yr). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The patient is asymptomatic after 6 months of follow up. Family screening by flexible sigmoidoscopy did not reveal polyps in any of his first degree relatives. [jdeonline.in]
Identification of the familial mutation in an affected patient is a prerequisite for predictive testing in asymptomatic persons at risk and sometimes enables prognostication. [aerzteblatt.de]
For this reason, endoscopic resection of polyps larger than 1.5 cm is advisible, even in asymptomatic patients. [wjgnet.com]
Howe et al. suggested that mutation carriers and asymptomatic patients should have colonoscopy every three years from age 15 years, while patients who have polyps should be examined every year [ 17 ]. [ojrd.biomedcentral.com]

Rectal Bleeding

Solitary juvenile polyps most commonly occur in the rectum and present with rectal bleeding. [en.wikipedia.org]
We report a case of rectal bleeding due to colorectal polyps of varying histology. Histology showed hyperplastic polyp, juvenile polyps (JP) with focal dysplasia, adenomatous polyp and villous adenoma with dysplasia. [jdeonline.in]
Patients present by age 30, with a mean age of presentation of 9.5 years. 3 The classical symptom is rectal bleeding, but because of the large number of polyps, patients can present with protein loss, malnutrition, cachexia, and failure to thrive. [ahcmedia.com]

Hematochezia
Clinical features When discovered as isolated sigmoid or rectal lesions during infancy, Juvenile polyps may cause bleeding, hematochezia, intussusception, or even self-amputation (Figure 4 ). In this cases, the risk of malignization is very low. [wjgnet.com]

Suggestibility
Analysis of recombinants and multipoint linkage analysis suggested that the HMPS locus lies in a 4-cM interval containing the D6S283 locus and flanked by markers D6S468 and D6S301. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The data suggest that inactivating BMPR1A can initiate colorectal tumourigenesis via the mixed polyposis-carcinoma sequence. [jmg.bmj.com]
As the name suggests, a variety of polyps may occur. People with HMPS are thought to have an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer, since some of these polyps may turn into cancer over time, unless they are removed. [cancer.net]

Confusion
Differential diagnosis HMPS may be confused with both juvenile polyposis syndrome (JPS) and " hyperplastic polyposis syndrome" (HPS). The phenotypes of JPS and HMPS may overlap and at times be indistinguishable. [humpath.com]
The occurrence of these features allows Cowden’s disease polyps to often be histologically confused with juvenile polyps. [ahcmedia.com]
When referring to historical records or the places they are kept, the computing use of the term archive should not be confused with the record-keeping meaning of the term. [wikivisually.com]
This syndrome is easily confused and clinically overlaps with HMPS and JPS [ 4, 8 ]. Genetics This syndrome is restricted to one large and extended Ashkenazi Jewish family and smaller Ashkenazi Jewish families [ 4, 8 ]. [omicsonline.org]
Workup
Referral for molecular genetic testing should be done in a targeted manner after appropriate endoscopic and histological workup has been carried out. [aerzteblatt.de]

Polyps
Some affected individuals have developed polyps of more than one type, and individual polyps may contain features of more than one histological type. Polyps can undergo malignant change. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Since some entities are associated with severe complications and a poor prognosis, and since the treatment options can be different for different syndromes, the outcome of the differential diagnosis has clinical consequences. [aerzteblatt.de]
Patients have increased LDL values from birth, and an increased cardiovascular risk, making early diagnosis and treatment imperative for improved prognosis. Three main causative genes have been associated with FH: LDLR, APOB and PCSK9. [clinicalgenome.org]
Etiology
[…] patients. 29 The frequency of finding PTEN germline mutations in BRRS is much lower than that observed for Cowden’s disease. 25 Thus, the reports of BRRS and JPS patients demonstrating germline PTEN mutations constitute only a portion of the genetic etiology [ahcmedia.com]
Larger case numbers and consistent inclusion criteria will be needed for clarification of the etiology of this polyposis. [aerzteblatt.de]
