Presentation
RESULTS: Labral tears were present in 90.1% of hips, and acetabular cartilage lesions were present in 67.3%, including 41.7% with grade 3 or 4 chondromalacia. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Pain
The pain measurements were quantified using visual analog scales, and factors that may contribute to different pain patterns were also evaluated. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Swelling
Symptoms of hip rheumatoid arthritis include pain, redness, swelling and warmth of the affected hip joints. Unchecked, inflammation can lead to hip joint damage loss of function and disability. [arthritis.org]
Symptoms The primary symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are similar to osteoarthritis and include pain, swelling and the loss of motion. [unitypoint.org]
It causes pain and swelling in the body's joints, such as the knees or hips. There are many types of arthritis, but osteoarthritis is the most common. [webmd.com]
- Collapse
ON hips were divided into three groups: 13 hips with 3 mm collapse and 9 hips with terminal ON. Joint fluid was collected during surgery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Eventually patients may need joint replacement if the disease has progressed to collapse of the bone. [rarediseases.org]
This collapsed head no longer matches with the socket, and the last step will be the shape adjustment of the socket itself to the altered femoral head. [pediatric-orthopedics.com]
The femoral head may weaken and collapse. Orthopedic Program UnityPoint Health - Meriter hospital, 9 Tower 202 S. [unitypoint.org]
The goal of surgery is to prevent the dislocation or collapse of the hip. That is, to keep the femoral head in your child’s hip socket. [seattlechildrens.org]
- Surgical Procedure
Information provided by this imaging technique was useful in both selecting and guiding the most appropriate surgical procedure and it was found that models depicted the actual bony contours with reasonable accuracy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Periacetabular Osteotomy Periacetabular osteotomy is the surgical procedure indicated in hip dysplasia and it involves cutting the bone around the acetabulum so as to fit the head of the femur bone into acetabular socket. [youthsportsortho.com]
In this module, the learner will become familiar with surgical procedures to best develop appropriate treatment plans that insure protection of addressed tissues, as well understand the most common movement impairment diagnoses to best develop appropriate [medbridgeeducation.com]
Surgical Treatment Core decompression – This surgical procedure removes or drills a tunnel into the area of the affected bone, which reduces pressure within the bone. [rarediseases.org]
- Weakness
Weak correlation only was demonstrated between the ligament variables and acetabular depth, which suggests that ligament shape and socket shape are not closely related. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Polymyositis typically presents with proximal muscle weakness and, to a much lesser extent, proximal muscle pain. Although the patient subjectively felt weak in the lower extremities, his strength on physical examination was excellent. [hopkinsarthritis.org]
Instability (buckling of a joint) suggests weakness of the ligaments or other structures that stabilize the joint, which are assessed by stress testing on physical examination. [merckmanuals.com]
Osteoporosis of the hip causes weak bones that break easily. Both of these are common in older people. Another problem is hip dysplasia, where the ball at the end of the femur is loose in the hip socket. It can cause hip dislocation. [medlineplus.gov]
Gastrointestinal
- Loss of Appetite
In addition, other symptoms may include loss of appetite, fever, energy loss, anemia, and rheumatoid nodules (lumps of tissue under the skin). [unitypoint.org]
Musculoskeletal
- Fracture
The association with hip fractures was even stronger, with Parkinson’s patients being at significantly increased risk for more than 15 years before diagnosis, and almost twice as likely to suffer a fractured hip in the four years preceding diagnosis. [theguardian.com]
The only difference in this group was an increased risk for revision in patients who had undergone THR for complications after fracture of the femoral neck (RR = 1.5, p = 0.0005). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Injuries that affect the hips include: Hip socket fractures Thigh (femur shaft) fractures Hamstring muscle injury Dislocated hip Hip strain Thigh muscle strain Pelvic fractures Disorders of the hip caused by disease can include: Hip dysplasia Burning [baylorarlington.com]

- Knee Pain
Unfortunately many cases of SCFE are misdiagnosed or overlooked, because the first symptom is knee pain, referred from the hip. The knee is often investigated and found to be normal. [sciencedaily.com]

- Osteophyte
We report the case of a 65-year-old man admitted for a 1-month history of severe hip symptoms with concentric joint space loss but no osteophytes. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Bony growths (osteophytes) appear on the spine in the neck region or in the lower back. Usually the bony growths are associated with some narrowing of the space between the vertebrae. [healthcentral.com]
Bone spurs, also called osteophytes, are bony projections that often develop along the edges of bones in joints affected by osteoarthritis. They can result in pain and loss of joint motion. [articles.chicagotribune.com]
Patients with osteoarthritis often develop large bone spurs, or osteophytes, around the joint, further limiting motion. [unitypoint.org]
Narrowing of the spinal canal is caused by osteophytes at the facet joints, bulging of the disc centrally, and/or hypertrophy or calcification of the spinal ligaments. [hopkinsarthritis.org]

- Waddling Gait
Twelve patients had a waddling gait. Four patients were partially wheelchair-dependent and ten patients had limitations in their maximum walking distance. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Patients present with a waddling gait, pain, fatigue and short stature. Contrary to Perthes disease, the abnormalities are usually symmetric. The knees, ankles and wrists are usually also involved. [radiologyassistant.nl]

Treatment for hip dysplasia can vary depending on the age of the child and the severity of the condition. [mcsgkids.com]
Prognosis
The most recent studies on diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic management are reviewed here. RECENT FINDINGS: Several large studies have evaluated the prevalence and outcome of hip involvement in AS. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
What is the prognosis? It is best to divide the discussion into short-term, within 5 years, and long-term prognosis, 20-40 years later. [perthesdisease.org]
Both classifications share the view that if less than 50% of the ball is involved, the prognosis is good, while more than 50% involvement indicates a potentially poor prognosis. [nonf.org]
The time of diagnosis is important for the prognosis of the disease. When the diagnosis is made before the child is six years old the prognosis is better. Younger children have better remodeling potential. [pediatric-orthopedics.com]
Etiology
Complications of treatment for these and other pediatric hip diseases can be devastating; so much recent research concentrates on the etiology, prevention, and effects of these complications. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The etiology of joint pain in these patients is often from osteochondrosis, although traumatic, inflammatory, or infectious origins should be ruled out as well. [aafp.org]
Etiology speculated to be post infectious reactive arthritis. It is important to rule out a bacterial infection of the joint and bone. Child may refuse to stand and limp. There may be pain on maneuvering the hip joint. [pedclerk.bsd.uchicago.edu]
Epidemiology
There have been recent articles on a number of aspects of this problem, including the epidemiology and pathology. The most recent studies on diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic management are reviewed here. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Many characteristics of their descriptive epidemiology have still to be explained, however, and it is clear that more research is needed. This content is only available as a PDF. © Oxford University Press [academic.oup.com]
