Presentation
Abstract Despite the substantial benefits of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART), a significant proportion of HIV-infected individuals still present with advanced disease and active AIDS-related opportunistic infections (OIs). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Fever
[…] example, it is standard clinical practice to administer trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (or another agent if trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole cannot be tolerated) to patients with an absolute CD4 lymphocyte count < 200 cells/microliters, unexplained chronic fever [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
[…] cerebral lymphoma High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma Carcinoma (invasive) of the cervix Carcinoma of the conjunctiva Carcinoma of the anus T-cell lymphoma Hodgkin's disease Lymphoproliferative disease, pre-lymphomatous Other conditions HIV-wasting syndrome (fever [news-medical.net]
Treatment
Today, OIs are less common in people with HIV because of effective HIV treatment. [cdc.gov]
The weight of evidence from recent studies supports the early initiation of ART (ie, within 2 weeks of initiating treatment for the acute OIs). Initiating ART early in acutely ill patients can reduce AIDS-related progression and death. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention
Similarly, specific antimicrobial prophylaxis to prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection in patients with absolute CD4 counts < 50 cells/microliters is also a widely recommended guideline. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
There are also steps you can take to prevent getting OIs: Talk to your health care provider about medicines and vaccines that prevent certain OIs. Prevent exposure to other sexually transmitted diseases. [cdc.gov]
