HIV-Associated Thrombocytopenia
Hiv Thrombocytopenia

Presentation

English We present the case of a probable cotrimoxazole-induced thrombocytopenia in a 44- year-old man with HIV. The patient is admitted to the hospital for opportunist infections associated with his base pathology. [dialnet.unirioja.es]

We also found that only 50 % of our TTP patients presented with autoantibodies to ADAMTS13. [touchoncology.com]

A spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage induced by thrombocytopenia should be considered when investigating HIV patients presenting even non-specific neurological symptoms. [link.springer.com]

C 2, 21 Patients with myelodysplastic syndrome usually will present with anemia and lymphoma with lymphadenopathy. [aafp.org]

In HIV related occlusive vascular disease two patterns of presentation have been reported( Robbs& Paruk, 2010 ). In the first type, there is no antecedent claudication and patients present with acute thrombosis. [intechopen.com]

Jaw & Teeth

  • Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums or bleeding from tooth extractions. [patient.info]

Some individuals with thrombocytopenia may experience external bleeding such as nosebleeds, and/or bleeding gums. Some women may have heavier or longer periods or breakthrough bleeding. [en.wikipedia.org]

Workup

The first steps in workup should be: 1. Look at the rest of the CBC, and the smear --> If you have pancytopenia, more likely to be category 1 of decreased production (marrow issues), but still could be other things as well. [errolozdalga.com]

In every patient, workup for both traditional and specific risk factors including opportunistic infections and prothrombotic states should be done. [intechopen.com]

Patients with other signs of infection should undergo appropriate workup to include ruling out DIC when indicated. [clinicaladvisor.com]

Treatment

Severe thrombocytopenia was diagnosed in 5% of those in the treatment interruption arm and just 1% of the continuous treatment arm (p = 0.03). [aidsmap.com]

In the study, 29 HIV-positive patients developed thrombocytopenia, 13 of them attributed to heparin treatment. Twenty-one HIV-negative patients developed thrombocytopenia and none of them were attributed to heparin treatment. [poz.com]

Prognosis

The long term prognosis of HIV-TMA is unfavourable and may depend on the stage of HIV infection. [pmj.bmj.com]

Prognosis The prognosis is very variable and will depend on the underlying condition. [patient.info]

Management of HIV-related ITP Immune thrombocytopenia in HIV disease does not increase the risk of progression to AIDS so should not be viewed as an indicator of poor prognosis. [europeanmedical.info]

Pathophysiology

The underlying pathophysiology includes accelerated peripheral platelet destruction and decreased ('ineffective') production of platelets from the infected megakaryocytes. HIV-related thrombocytopenia (HIV-TP) responds to antiretroviral therapy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
