Treatment and prognosis In infants, most hydroceles (around 90%) resolve spontaneously, and they are thought to result from incomplete obliteration of the processus vaginalis 4. [radiopaedia.org]

Etiology

Etiology Congenital There are two main subtypes of congenital hydrocele: communicating hydrocele spermatic cord hydrocele 1,2 In the communicating type, fluid collects around a patent processus vaginalis which failed to successfully obliterate. [radiopaedia.org]

Prevention

Prevention Can a hydrocele be prevented? There is nothing you can do to prevent your baby from getting a hydrocele. For adolescent and adult men, the best protection against a hydrocele is to keep the testicles and scrotum free of injury. [my.clevelandclinic.org]

Communicating hydroceles persisting for more than a year generally require surgery to prevent future complications. You will see both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist before the operation on the day of surgery. [childrenshospital.org]
