Idiopathic Recurrent Pericarditis
Idiopathic Relapsing Pericarditis

Presentation

Recurrence was documented in patients who presented typical chest pain and 1 or more of the following signs: fever, rubs, electrocardiographic changes, pericardial effusion, increase of acute phase reactants. [ped-rheum.biomedcentral.com]

Introduction Case Presentation: A 56-year-old previously healthy man presented with 2 days of pleuritic left anterior chest pain, lessened by sitting forward. [ahajournals.org]

Fulminant clinical tamponade presents with symptoms that depend on its etiology. [textbookofcardiology.org]

Case Presentation: Here, we describe a 34 year-old female admitted with five days of worsening left sided pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath. [shmabstracts.com]

Workup

Similar negative workup occurs in approximately 80% of all cases. [shmabstracts.com]

The objective of this article is to review the etiology, workup, and treatment for this disease, especially new, emerging therapeutic options. [dovepress.com]

Treatment

Colchicine is the standard treatment for FMF, while patients with TRAPS do not respond to colchicine therapy, but are responsive to corticosteroids. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prognosis

The overall life prognosis is excellent in idiopathic recurrent pericarditis and complications are uncommon. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prognosis of the disease is excellent, as severe complications are rare. [textbookofcardiology.org]

The prognosis depends on many factors, although in most cases with appropriate treatment, it is good Pericarditis, in some cases, can become a chronic issue. [dovemed.com]

Etiology

In developed countries, the idiopathic form is the most frequent, and the search for an infectious etiology is almost invariably negative. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Conclusions: The underlying etiology of idiopathic recurrent acute pericarditis remains controversial, as it may be a cross of infectious, autoimmune, or autoinflammatory etiologies. [shmabstracts.com]

Prevention

Therapeutic strategies are not standardised, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs at high dosages being the mainstay of therapy with the possible addition of low dose colchicine to prevent recurrences. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Sometimes, more intense treatment is needed to prevent complications. Recovery from pericarditis may take a few days to weeks or even months. [heart.org]
