Presentation
We reported here a rare case of inverted papilloma of maxillary sinus presented initially with ipsilateral proptosis. A middle-aged lady with history of having allergic rhinitis presented with progressive left eye proptosis. [jadweb.org]
Case report We present the case of a 57 year-old male, who presented with a chronic unilateral nasal obstruction. He complained of epistaxis and headaches. The clinical examination revealed a right nasal tumor. [latunisiemedicale.com]
The presentation can be similar to other sinonasal masses, with nasal obstruction, sinus pain, and epistaxis. [radiopaedia.org]
Rarely will patients present with diplopia or visual impairement. In some cases, IP may be detected incidentally during dacryocystorhinostomy for nasolacrimal duct obstruction, or a papilloma may present from the punctum. [eyewiki.aao.org]
A 93 year old Caucasian male with history of IP presented to our institution for evaluation of a sinonasal mass with intracranial extension. The patient was first diagnosed with inverted papilloma eight years prior to presentation. [oatext.com]
Entire Body System
- Severe Pain
According to a standardized protocol, the following postoperative symptoms were assessed on a scale of 0–3 (0 = not present, 1 = low, 2 = moderate, 3 = severe): Pain in the upper jaw, nasal stuffiness, increased nasal secretion, or crusting. [mdpi.com]
Skin
- Flushing
If this was reported, a standard dye test (Jones test) (0 ≤ 2 min. transport time, 1 = delayed transport = 2–5 min., 2 = no transport) and passive testing by flushing the lacrimal drainage system with isotonic saline (possible, with increased pressure [mdpi.com]
Eyes
- Dry Eyes
There was no evidence of left eye lagophthalmos, exposure keratopathy or dry eye. The rest of the anterior segment and posterior segment details of both eyes were unremarkable. [jadweb.org]
- Lagophthalmos
There was no evidence of left eye lagophthalmos, exposure keratopathy or dry eye. The rest of the anterior segment and posterior segment details of both eyes were unremarkable. [jadweb.org]
Neurologic
- Paresthesia
All patients should be informed preoperatively because, overall, paresthesia of the infraorbital nerve is the most common complaint. Four patients showed a volume reduction of the maxillary sinus. [mdpi.com]

Treatment

CONCLUSION: The use of the endoscope in this type of surgical treatment is an important success factor in the treatment of inverted papilloma. Keywords: endoscopic sinus surgery, inverted papilloma, recurrence. [scielo.br]
The treatment of choice is surgical resection leaving disease-free margins. When there is temporal bone involvement, tympanomastoidectomy is an excellent choice for initial treatment 6. [bjorl.org.br]
Inverted Papilloma Treatment Surgery Surgery is the primary treatment for inverted papillomas. Because of the high recurrence rate (40 to 80 percent), early, aggressive surgery to remove the papilloma usually is recommended. [upmc.com]
CCP can be associated with other malignant tumors as well. [1] Treatment [ edit ] Medial maxillectomy is the treatment of choice. [en.wikipedia.org]
Prognosis
In summary, IP is a rare tumour and relevant knowledge regarding factors affecting recurrence, malignant transformation and prognosis is still limited. [openarchive.ki.se]
The immunohistochemical panel presented in this report was adequate to verify the occurtence of cell protiferation and transformation in the affected tissue, as well as to study the prognosis for the case. REFERENCES 1. [scielo.br]
Prognosis and Predictive Factors The prognosis for inverted papilloma is quite good, with a recurrence rate of less than 5%, and the likelihood of synchronous or subsequent development of urothelial carcinoma 6% and 3%, respectively. [emedicine.medscape.com]

Etiology
For these reasons, several studies have been made to evaluate the efficacy of the different courses of treatment, but only afew studies have been carried out to establish the etiology of this tumour, which is still uncertain. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The exact etiology is unknown, but human papillomavirus infection, smoking, and chronic sinusitis are predisposing factors for the development of nasal papillomas. There are three types of nasal papillomas. [amboss.com]
Human papillomavirus is not an etiologic agent of urothelial inverted papillomas. Am J Surg Pathol. 2013 Aug. 37(8):1223-8. [Medline]. van Oers JM, Lurkin I, van Exsel AJ, et al. [emedicine.medscape.com]
The etiology is still unclear but certainly can be called upon several factors such as allergy, tobacco smoke, the papilloma virus. Are affected by this disease especially adults between 50 and 70 years with a predominance of males than females. [gruppootologico.com]
Some etiologies have been proposed, including allergic rhinitis, chronic inflammation, and smoking. There is a possible association with the human papilloma virus (HPV) 1. [bjorl.org.br]
Epidemiology
This proportion is much lower than that established for SNC in several epidemiological studies. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

The aim was also to present epidemiological data on IP on a population basis and to describe how incidence and survival have changed for SNMs in the Swedish population. [openarchive.ki.se]
Epidemiology IP has a median age of onset of 34.5 years with a slight female predisposition (M:F 1:1.2). It has a predilection for the lateral nasal wall followed by the maxillary sinus, and ethmoid sinus. [eyewiki.aao.org]
Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology IP is not a primary lacrimal drainage system tumor but a primary tumor of the tissue surrounding the lacrimal drainage system and spreads to the lacrimal sac via secondary extension. [eyewiki.aao.org]
Prevention
Once the stalk is removed, the surgeon treats the underlying bone to prevent the tumor from growing back. [mountsinai.org]

Endoscopic approaches such as EEA have good success rates in preventing recurrence and better cosmetic outcomes than traditional open surgical approaches. [upmc.com]
