Cardiac conduction defects, pulmonic stenosis, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are often (85%) present. Cognitive defects are present in 30% of patients and some individuals have been described as mentally retarded. [disorders.eyes.arizona.edu]
If no lentigo is present, findings from at least three categories must be present and a first-degree relative of the patient must have lentigines. [4] Further, lentigines which give a clue to diagnosis may occur at any age as in our case. [ijpd.in]
Clinically, they present as irregularly shaped, faint-to-dark brown macules. [medicaljournals.se]
From the age of 6 years hyperchromic spots with similar characteristics appeared on his palms and on the soles of his feet, where they were present on the areas of the toes, the metatarsi, and the heels (Fig. 2). [revistagastroenterologiamexico.org]

Etiology
Etiology and Pathophysiology Ephelides occur as a result of increased melanin content inside of keratinocytes, mainly seen in the basal cell layer. The number of melanocytes is normal. [unboundmedicine.com]
The etiology of ND is unknown, but it is associated with a large reduction in melanosomes with variable melanocyte morphology; these melanosomes do not transfer efficiently into keratinocytes.4 The few melanosomes that transfer into keratinocytes are [journals.lww.com]

Pathophysiology
Etiology and Pathophysiology Ephelides occur as a result of increased melanin content inside of keratinocytes, mainly seen in the basal cell layer. The number of melanocytes is normal. [unboundmedicine.com]
Darker skin patients such as Asians have higher epidermal melanin content and are more likely to develop erythema and PIH, which can be considered as a default pathophysiologic response to cutaneous injury in these patients. [e-ijd.org]
Pathophysiology Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation and pollution as one ages may induce the common solar lentigo. [5] Depending on the type of lentigo present, a solitary lesion or multiple lesions can occur anywhere on the body. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Prevention
Sun Avoidance Practice sun protection to prevent new lentigines from appearing and prevent further darkening or growth of the existing spots. This includes the use of broad-spectrum sunscreens and limiting exposure to sunlight. [pooledermatology.com]
Prevention The only way to prevent lentigines is to properly care for your skin and protect it from the sun. [virginiamohs.com]
However, use of sunscreen may prevent new lesions from forming and existing lesions from becoming darker in the case of solar lentinges. [ozarkderm.com]
Solar lentigines are best prevented by minimizing sun exposure. They are not typically cancerous, although a check by a dermatologist is recommended. There are various treatments we have available to decrease or remove lentigines. [singerskin.com]
How can lentigines be prevented Lentigines associated with exposure ultraviolet radiation can be prevented by very careful sun protection. Clothing is more successful at preventing new lentigines than are sunscreens. [myskindoctor.co.uk]
