Presentation

We present 3 cases of Listeria monocytogenes presenting as focal infections to our hospitals, all of which are the first reported cases from Australia. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Treatment

The initial treatment with vancomycin and meropenem did not produce any clinical effect. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prognosis

Documentation of L. monocytogenes pericarditis is an extremely rare entity with very scarce reports in medical literature, and is usually associated with a very poor prognosis. A case report is presented together with a review of the literature. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Outlook / Prognosis What can I expect if I have listeriosis? If you have a healthy immune system and develop listeriosis, you’ll usually feel better without treatment in about two days. [my.clevelandclinic.org]

Etiology

Aspergillus is by far the most frequent etiology of post-transplant brain abscesses. Bacteria, apart from Nocardia, have a low association with brain abscesses in transplant recipients. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

In Argentina, listeriosis is not a national notifiable disease but physicians should always consider L. monocytogenes as a possible etiologic agent of neonatal meningitis. [scielo.org.ar]

Epidemiology

Specific food linkages were only made epidemiologically in this cluster. CDC has established an epidemiological link between consumption of raw hot dogs or undercooked chicken and approximately 20% of the sporadic cases under prospective study. [web.archive.org]

Unless recognized and treated, Listeria infections can result in significant morbidity and mortality. [2] Pathophysiology L monocytogenes is a motile, non–spore-forming, gram-positive bacillus that has aerobic and facultatively anaerobic characteristics [emedicine.medscape.com]

Prevention L. monocytogenes in food are killed by pasteurization and cooking. In general, guidance on the prevention of listeriosis is similar to guidance used to help prevent other foodborne illnesses. [who.int]

Preventing Listeriosis The meat and poultry industry controls L. monocytogenes in fully cooked meat and poultry products by achieving a validated lethality step ( e.g. cooking). [meatpoultryfoundation.org]
