Presentation
We present three cases and review the literature. One case was identified at presentation. A subsequent review of our histopathology database revealed two further cases. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Fatigue
It’s also important to understand that even benign tumors can damage brain tissue and cause side effects, such as headaches, fatigue and double or blurred vision. [cancercenter.com]
[…] extends to the spinal cord Common in children, and among men and women in their 40s and 50s Occurrence peaks at age five and again at age 34 Accounts for two percent of all brain tumors Symptoms Severe headaches Nausea and vomiting Difficulty walking Fatigue [braintumor.org]
Questionnaire, 47 items Outcome: high RT group had more fatigue/malaise, emotional functioning Conclusion: 45/25 schedule better Intergroup NCCTG/RTOG/ECOG (1986-1994) Randomized. 203 patients. Age 18. [en.wikibooks.org]
Fatigue and depression are common in individuals with an astrocytoma. Desmoplastic infantile astrocytoma (DIA) is a very rare grade I astrocytoma. [rarediseases.org]

Nausea
Chemotherapy was discontinued in two patients because of severe nausea and vomiting; there was no hematologic or neurologic toxicity. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Friedrich-Schiller-Universität, D-07740 Jena, Germany 3 Institute of Pathology, Klinikum Erfurt GmbH, D-99089 Erfurt, Germany Published on line in May 1999 PATIENT HISTORY AND IMAGING DESCRIPTION: This 16-year-old young man presented in 1993 with headache, nausea [path.upmc.edu]
Nausea and vomiting Some of the chemotherapy drugs used may make your child feel sick or vomit. We will give anti-sickness drugs at the same time to stop nausea and vomiting. These are usually very effective. [royalmarsden.nhs.uk]
Brain Stem Glioma Back to top Characteristics Named for its location at the base of the brain Can range from low grade to high grade Occurs most often in children between three and ten years of age, but can occur in adults Symptoms Headaches Nausea Speech [braintumor.org]
Early symptoms include: Headaches Blurry vision Seizures Memory loss Nausea and vomiting Changes in behavior Grades and Types Like other tumors, astrocytomas are graded on a scale of I to IV, based on how abnormal the cells look and how fast they grow [webmd.com]

Failure to Thrive
Infants with a brain tumor tend to present with large heads and non-specific symptoms of irritability, vomiting, failure to thrive, and regression of developmental milestones. [childrensmn.org]
In infants and young children, low-grade astrocytomas presenting in the hypothalamus may result in diencephalic syndrome, which is manifested by failure to thrive in an emaciated, seemingly euphoric child. [cancer.gov]

Knee Pain
A 12-year-old boy was investigated for knee pain and contractures, and was found to have an intraspinal tumor of a lumbar nerve root and a tumor in the tectal region, both low-grade astrocytomas. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Hypertelorism
We report on a child with midline facial defects with hypertelorism (MFDH), median cleft lip, sphenoidal ventriculocele, partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, and low-grade astrocytoma in the cervicomedullary junction. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Median Cleft Lip
We report on a child with midline facial defects with hypertelorism (MFDH), median cleft lip, sphenoidal ventriculocele, partial agenesis of the corpus callosum, and low-grade astrocytoma in the cervicomedullary junction. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Headache
A 21-year-old woman was found to have a non-enhancing right frontal lesion, supposed to be a low-grade astrocytoma according to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studied for chronic headache. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
She also has chronic headaches, confusion and ataxia. [clinical-mri.com]
They may also be classified by subtypes: Fibrillary Protoplasmic Gemistocytic Symptoms General symptoms include: Headaches Weakness on one side of the body Problems with balance Seizures Behavior, memory and personality changes Low-Grade Astrocytoma Treatment [uwhealth.org]

Workup
Detection of many of the molecular changes that underlie the development of gliomas and other BT can now be done by immunohistochemistry and is getting into the mainstream of the diagnostic workup of BT. [neuropathology-web.org]
[…] tumors Other studies EEG may be used to evaluate and monitor epileptiform activity ECG and chest radiographs are indicated to evaluate operative risk CSF studies may be used to rule out other diagnoses (eg, metastasis, lymphoma, medulloblastoma) See Workup [emedicine.medscape.com]
Treatment
By 12 h of IL-4 treatment, both cdk4 and cdk2 kinase activities against the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) were reduced and nuclear entry of pRb was prohibited. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Etiology
In 183 short chapters, the book provides the essentials clinicians need on symptoms/signs, diagnostic tests, and neurologic disorders of all etiologies. For this edition, Timothy A. [books.google.com]
For the majority of astrocytoma, the etiology is unknown. Children with a familial cancer predisposition have an increased risk for developing both low grade and high grade gliomas. [childrensmn.org]

Ongoing controversies regarding etiology, diagnosis, treatment There have been recent discussions in the lay press regarding cell phone use as a cause of brain tumors. To date, there has been no substantive data to support this association. [clinicaladvisor.com]
Epidemiology
The second edition of this well-received volume has been revised and updated to reflect the advances in pathological classification and molecular epidemiology of diffuse low-grade gliomas (DLGG) in adults and offers an updated review on individualized [books.google.com]

Pathophysiology
Pathophysiology Low-grade astrocytomas are primary tumors (rather than extraaxial or metastatic tumors) of the brain. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Astrocytomas in the base of the brain are more common in young people and account for roughly 75% of neuroepithelial tumors. [ citation needed ] Pathophysiology [ edit ] Astrocytoma causes regional effects by compression, invasion, and destruction of [en.wikipedia.org]

Prevention
Pre-treatment of RTLGA with anti-sense but not missense p21(waf1/cip1) oligonucleotide prior to IL-4: (a) restored cdk activities; (b) reduced cdk4-associated p21(waf1/cip1) levels; (c) prevented p27(kipl) elevation; and (d) reversed growth arrest. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
A near-complete resection (less than 10 cc of residual tumor) of low-grade astrocytomas prevents tumor recurrence for longer periods of time. [neurosurgery.ucla.edu]
There is nothing you could have done to prevent this from happening. [ucsfbenioffchildrens.org]
