Lye Poisoning

Lye Ingestion

Presentation

  • NGT suction may be of particular value following ingestion of zinc chloride, mercuric chloride, or hydrogen fluoride, unless signs of perforation are present. This should be done after consulting with a regional poison control center.[emedicine.medscape.com]
  • Arena continues to work with concerned activists on a bill to present at an upcoming session of the House.[digitaldukemed.mc.duke.edu]
  • While the Sheriff is investigating, there does not appear to be any crime involved unless the employee was illegal or the chemical is banned from being present in a food preparation area.[jonathanturley.org]
  • Since lye can be easily eliminated from cast iron by simply rinsing with plenty of water, which also has the effect of neutralizing it, cooking in a piece cleaned by it does not present a poisoning hazard.[castironcollector.com]
  • If oil particles (e.g. lubricants, cutting fluids, glycerine, etc.) are present, use a NIOSH type R or P filter. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-facepiece positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.[glue.umd.edu]
Falling
  • This often occurs when treated hair strands fall over and into the eye. Chemical burns to the eye are considered a medical emergency and need immediate evaluation in an emergency room. If left untreated, injury to the eye can be permanent.[poison.org]
  • Symptoms may include bleeding, vomiting, diarrhea, fall in blood pressure. Damage may appears days after exposure. Skin Contact: Corrosive! Contact with skin can cause irritation or severe burns and scarring with greater exposures.[glue.umd.edu]
  • Chris Jorgenson - Sioux Falls, South Dakota November 27, 2012 Q. I have been having cramping in both legs and sharp pains shooting down my legs. My Mother-in-law said my Father-in-law before he died (in 1996) had the same problem.[finishing.com]

Dysphagia
  • Symptoms and Signs Initial symptoms of caustic ingestion include drooling and dysphagia. In severe cases, pain, vomiting, and sometimes bleeding develop immediately in the mouth, throat, chest, or abdomen.[merckmanuals.com]
Acute Abdomen
  • “And so we operated on him because it seemed like he had an acute abdomen and sure enough he did; entire stomach was dead. His pancreas, which lives behind the stomach, was burned from the lye eating through the stomach.[wakehealth.edu]

Treatment

  • Please find relevant information on First Aid for Lye Poisoning regarding cause, signs & symptoms, administration of first aid treatment, prognosis, preventive measures, and additional resources HERE.[dovemed.com]
  • Treating the Wounds The team had to determine how to treat the victims, because there was little in medical journals and literature about liquid lye, and most of what had been written about similar injuries suggested treatment such as steroids.[wakehealth.edu]
  • Treatment is possible only based on the extent of damage done. Source(s): Anonymous · 5 years ago[answers.yahoo.com]
  • Treatment Early treatment may include steroids, antibiotics and, some suggest, prophylactic dilatation. Still as many as 40% will develop strictures.[learningradiology.com]
  • Treatment is supportive. Gastric emptying and activated charcoal are contraindicated. Perforation is treated surgically.[merckmanuals.com]

Prognosis

  • Please find relevant information on First Aid for Lye Poisoning regarding cause, signs & symptoms, administration of first aid treatment, prognosis, preventive measures, and additional resources HERE.[dovemed.com]
  • Prognosis There is a significantly higher risk of developing esophageal carcinoma 20-40 years after ingestion. Esophageal perforations may occur Caustic Esophagitis.[learningradiology.com]
  • Poisoning Prognosis The key to a good outcome is rapid recognition that a poisoning has occurred and rapid transport to a qualified medical facility when indicated. When medical care (and use of the U.S.[emedicinehealth.com]

Epidemiology

  • Epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects were recorded. Results A total of 78 patients were admitted, 45 (57.7%) were male, with a median age of 2.2 years (range: 1-17.3 years).[dialnet.unirioja.es]

  • It helps prevent the poison from being absorbed from the stomach into the body. Sometimes, several doses of activated charcoal are needed to treat severe poisoning.[mayoclinic.org]
  • Conclusions Family education about preventive and initial measures after caustic ingestion must be improved in an attempt to prevent wrong actions which can be harmful.[dialnet.unirioja.es]

  • NGT suction may prevent small intestine exposure. Esophageal perforation is rare. NGT suction may be of particular value following ingestion of zinc chloride, mercuric chloride, or hydrogen fluoride, unless signs of perforation are present.[emedicine.medscape.com]
