Presentation
Twelve patients (57%) had nerve territory-oriented macrodactyly, whereas 9 (43%) presented with lipomatous type. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
In the case reported here, debulking combined with a shortening osteotomy was the treatment of choice. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
Macrodactyly associated with Proteus syndrome should be distinguished from other forms of macrodactyly because of its poor prognosis and high rate of recurrence. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Etiology
Abstract Macrodactyly or megalodactyly is a rare congenital malformation of essentially unknown etiology. Treatment of this affliction is generally surgical and is dependent on the type of growth rate of the enlarged digit. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Pathophysiology
The specific nerve pathophysiology in this form of macrodactyly has not been well described and a genetic etiology for this specific form of enlargement is unknown. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prevention
Although it is difficult to compare treatment regimens, epiphysiodesis/epiphysectomy was quite effective in the prevention of longitudinal overgrowth of the digits, but resection of the hypertrophic nerves was unsuccessful in preventing finger overgrowth [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
