PubMed (1966 to present), Embase (1974 to present), and Web of Science (1898 to present). All articles that reported an original effect statistic for indoor tanning and non-melanoma skin cancer were included. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The characteristics and stages of basal cell carcinoma are: Stage 0: Also called carcinoma in situ, cancer discovered in this stage is only present in the epidermis (upper layer of the skin) and has not spread deeper to the dermis. [cancercenter.com]
Entire Body System
- Fatigue
Other symptoms may include fatigue and weight loss. What are the signs and symptoms of skin cancer? Skin cancer usually begins as a simple, painless spot, sore or rash on the skin. [cancercenter.com]
Side effects of radiation treatment may include vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, or skin irritation resembling a sunburn or suntan. [britannica.com]
The main side effects of these drugs include fatigue, low blood cell counts, rashes, diarrhea, and changes in sensation in the tips of the fingers or toes. Learn more about the basics of chemotherapy and preparing for treatment. [cancer.net]
It can also cause fatigue. These side effects are temporary. In addition, a topical cream has recently been approved for the treatment of certain low-risk nonmelanoma skin cancers. [emedicinehealth.com]
Side effects of these treatments include headache, chills, fever, fatigue and muscle aches. Targeted therapy. [healthywomen.org]
Gastrointestinal
- Nausea
Chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy drugs may cause a variety of side effects, such as nausea and vomiting, fatigue, nerve damage, mouth sores and rashes. Patients who undergo radiation therapy may experience skin irritation. [cancercenter.com]
Nausea for any reason can be treated with antiemetics. [11] Damage to the epithelial surfaces [12] Epithelial surfaces may sustain damage from radiation therapy. [en.wikipedia.org]
Side effects of these drugs include nausea and vomiting. Radiation therapy. Radiation is usually used to prevent recurrence or for melanomas that have come back or spread to other organs. [healthywomen.org]
Other frequently reported effects include skin dryness, pruritus, nausea, photodrug reactions, disease exacerbation (eg, systemic lupus erythematosus), and disease induction (eg, polymorphous light eruption). [doi.org]

- Ulcer
Learn More | Close Ulcerated BCC Over time, the top layer skin may begin to break down. This is called ulceration. Ulceration causes the center of the lesion to collapse. [skincancer.net]
MARAZZI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY In most cases, cancerous lumps are red and firm and sometimes turn into ulcers, while cancerous patches are usually flat and scaly. [nhs.uk]
Sometimes they've a sore (ulcerated) area in the centre. Pigmented basal cell cancer Pigmented basal cell cancers have dark areas and can look like warts or sometimes melanoma. [cancerresearchuk.org]
It is sometimes called a rodent ulcer. It's very common. About 75% of all skin cancers in the UK are BCCs. Most BCCs are very slow-growing and almost never spread to other parts of the body. [christie.nhs.uk]
Often this cancer appears as a firm red bump or ulceration of the skin that does not heal. Squamous cell carcinomas can spread to lymph nodes in the area. Melanoma is a skin cancer (malignancy) that arises from the melanocytes in the skin. [enthealth.org]
- Skin Lesion
Any changing skin lesion should be examined by a dermatologist. Visit an ASDS dermatologist. [asds.net]
The second type of skin lesion that is not cancer is seborrheic keratosis. These lesions start to appear when people enter their 50’s, and gradually increase in number. [healthinaging.org]

- Fair Complexion
People with fair complexions are at higher risk than are people with darker skin. Having a large number of moles is also a risk factor. If you have a family history of skin cancer, you are at higher risk. [calverthealthmedicine.org]
Middle-aged and elderly people, especially those with fair complexions and frequent sun exposure, are most likely to be affected. It often appears as a bump, or as a red, scaly patch on the rim of the ear, the face, the lips, and the mouth. [reliantmedicalgroup.org]
CAUSES SCC, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma are all associated with chronic sun exposure, a light or fair complexion, and immune suppression. [assh.org]
Some of the risk factors for skin cancers include:- Light or fair complexion, especially blonde, red or light-brown hair and blue, green or gray eyed individuals. Dark skinned individuals may develop melanoma. [news-medical.net]
Risk factors for non-melanoma skin cancers include: Sunlight (ultraviolet radiation or UV) exposure Tanning Severe, blistering sunburns Personal history of a previous skin cancer Receiving an organ transplant Family history of skin cancer Fair complexion [roswellpark.org]
- Skin Disease
Our hospital (Shanghai Skin Diseases & STD Hospital) started to study 5-aminolevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) in 1996. So far, we have treated 76 cases of skin cancer and pre-cancer using topical ALA-PDT. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
This can increase their risk of getting squamous cell skin cancer, and maybe other skin cancers, too. Family diseases Xeroderma pigmentosum: This very rare disease makes the skin less able to repair sun damage. This disease tends to run in families. [skincancerprevention.org]
What to think about Precancer skin growths, such as actinic keratoses and Bowen's disease, can develop into squamous cell skin cancer if they are not treated. [healthlinkbc.ca]
Also people with allergies, hay fever and other skin diseases are at greater risk. SQCC often appear as a red or pink bump with a tight crust or scale and frequently ulcerate. [ctdermpc.com]
- Papule
Although the classic clinical presentation as a rapidly growing papule in a sun-exposed site of an elderly patient is not specific, certain histopathologic and ancillary pathologic features allow for its discrimination in most cases. [doi.org]
Learn More | Close Merkel Cell Carcinoma Kaposi Sarcoma Kaposi sarcoma KS lesions may be flat (patches or macules), raised (plaques or papules), or bumpy (nodules). They are usually red, purple, or brown. [skincancer.net]
Characteristic features of BCCs may include: A few millimetres to several centimetres in diameter Waxy small raised lesions (papules) with a depressed centre Pearl-like and translucent in appearance Ulcer-like in appearance Tendency to bleed Red and scaly [southerncross.co.nz]
Centrally located erythematous papule represents invasive melanoma with surrounding macular lentigo maligna (melanoma in situ). It grows slowly over 5-20 years. [web.archive.org]
Bowenoid papulosis, which histologically resembles Bowen disease, presents as reddish papules. [7] Prostate [ edit ] When associated with the prostate, squamous cell carcinoma is very aggressive in nature. [en.wikipedia.org]
Workup
(See Workup .) Neglected tumors can continue to grow and lead to significant local destruction and even disfigurement. [emedicine.medscape.com]
BCC rarely metastasizes, so a metastatic workup is usually not necessary. There are several factors that correlate with poor prognosis for recurrence and metastasis. [cancer.gov]
Treatment
Immunotherapies in the Treatment of Advanced Melanoma Immunotherapy is treatment that uses certain parts of the immune system to fight illnesses, including cancer. [cancercare.org]
If they are then the doctor will recommend appropriate treatment. Treatment The treatment of a BCC will depend on its type, size and location. Early treatment will lessen scarring and local complications. [southerncross.co.nz]
Your treatment is usually completed in 8 sessions but it varies on the location of the skin cancer and can range from 5-10 treatments. [centrastatecancercenter.com]

Prognosis
Early detection greatly improves the prognosis of patients with malignant melanoma. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
In general, the prognosis is good for people with squamous cell carcinoma. [cbsnews.com]
Skin cancers that are found and treated early need less invasive treatment and have a better outcome (prognosis). What about spots that aren't cancer? Not all spots that appear on your skin are cancerous. [mydr.com.au]
Herein, we review the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical, and pathologic attributes as well as the staging treatment and prognosis of this important public health menace. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. [doi.org]
Etiology
This article provides a comprehensive and thorough overview of skin cancer, with an emphasis on understanding its epidemiology, incidence, etiology and related risk factors. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of skin cancer remains a goal for healthcare systems. A clearer understanding of causative factors is an essential step in the prevention of skin cancer. [doi.org]
Epidemiology
Epidemiology of cutaneous melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany: incidence, clinical subtypes, tumour stages and localization (epidemiology of skin cancer). Br J Dermatol 2003; 149:1200–6. [doi.org]
Epidemiological studies have reported significantly more non-melanoma skin cancer in men than in women. Life-style choices and difference in immunosuppression play a major role in this gender disparity. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Aims: To summarise the epidemiological evidence on sun exposure during childhood and adolescence and melanoma risk. [dx.doi.org]

Prevention
Several clinical trials give evidence that long-term use of sunscreen prevents the appearance of non-melanotic skin cancer such as AK and SCC, but not of BCC. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Similar findings were observed in a subgroup meta-analysis of 10 studies on both primary prevention trials (RR = 0.98; 95% CI = 0.93–1.03) and secondary prevention trials (RR = 0.97; 95% CI = 0.83–1.13). [doi.org]
Despite being very common, skin cancer is preventable. [loyolamedicine.org]
