Presentation
We present two cases of gestational choriocarcinoma, showing some of these unusual presentations of a primarily gynecological problem. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Workup
Prognosis of gestational choriocarcinoma largely depends upon early diagnosis of the disease, comprehensive metastatic workup, selection of appropriate regimen of chemotherapy from outset and carefully planned follow up. [ayubmed.edu.pk]
See Workup for more detail. Management Patients with GTN are subdivided into 2 groups: those with a WHO score of less than 7 (low-risk) and those with a score of 7 or higher and who are at high risk of therapy failure. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Treatment
The patient had no detectable metastasis or evidence of recurrence 15 months after treatment, which involved surgery without adjuvant chemotherapy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The type of treatment used depends on where the cancer recurs and what treatment the woman has already received. [cancer.org]

Prognosis
Non-gestational choriocarcinoma carries a bad prognosis than GCO. We present a case of NGCO who had pulmonary metastasis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis depends upon early diagnosis and management. [ayubmed.edu.pk]

Etiology
Etiology Etiology is not known. Diagnostic methods Histologically, choriocarcinoma is characterized by trophoblast proliferation, absence of chorionic villi and tissue necrosis with bleeding. [orpha.net]
Differentiation between two etiologies of primary choriocarcinoma can be achieved with DNA polymorphic analysis and it is necessary to distinguish between them to approach to an appropriate treatment of a patient. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Etiology In the case of gestational choriocarcinoma, approximately 5% of cases of complete hydatidiform mole are followed by choriocarcinoma. Only about half the cases of choriocarcinoma arise from a complete hydatidiform mole. [radiopaedia.org]
Etiology, pathogenesis 50% cases of choriocarcioma arise in complete mole, 25% follow normal term pregnancy, 25% follow spontaneous abortion. Extremely rare are cases arising in ectopic pregnancy. [atlases.muni.cz]
Epidemiology
METHODS: Overall and 5-year average age-adjusted incidence rates were computed with the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program public-use database. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Summary Epidemiology Annual incidence and prevalence are not known. [orpha.net]

(Lurain, 2010) return to top Pathophysiology Choriocarcinoma is an invasive, highly vascular, anaplastic trophblastic tissue made up of cytotrophoblasts and syncitotrophoblasts that secrete human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in high amounts (Goldstein [sharinginhealth.ca]

Prevention
One of the major unresolved problems in high-risk choriocarcinoma is the prevention of hemorrhage from tumor necrosis during chemotherapy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention There is no known means of prevention. However, early detection of the symptoms and prompt medical treatment can improve the odds of survival. Key terms Biopsy — A sample of an organ taken to look for abnormalities. [medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com]
