Presentation
A 35-year-old married woman with no previous or family history of thyroid disease presented in 1951 with severe recurrent abdominal pain. Laparotomy was performed and both ovaries were found to be cystic. [birpublications.org]
Its clinical presentation is very variable, ranging from benign asymptomatic tumors to tumors with distant metastases. [elsevier.es]
Because of its rarity, the diagnosis and management of this tumour have not been clearly defined. We present a case of 58- year-old female diagnosed with a primary malignant struma ovarii and review the literature on malignancy in struma ovarii cases. [fr.glosbe.com]
Optically clear nuclei, when extensive, were useful to diagnose papillary carcinoma, but were present nevertheless in smaller numbers in both macrofollicular and microfollicular adenomas. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Fever
The first patient, a 57-year-old woman, complained of fever and abdominal pain and distension. A computed tomography (CT) showed a solid-cystic mass in the left ovary. [elsevier.es]
Treatment
Treatment was started with levothyroxine 175μg/day to keep TSH levels suppressed. After surgery, CA-125 dropped to 89.4U/mL; CA 15.3, thyroglobulin, and thyroglobulin antibodies were undetectable. [elsevier.es]

Surgical excision continues to remain the initial definitive primary treatment. However, metastatic and recurrent malignant struma ovarii have been treated with radioactive 131I (Woodruff et al, 1966; Kempers et al, 1970; Willemse et al, 1987). [birpublications.org]
