Presentation
We present a rare case of 41 year old male patient who presented with bilateral mesiodens. Key words: Mesiodens; supernumerary teeth; maxillary central incisor DOI: BJMS 2011; 10 (4): 287-288 Downloads Download data is not yet available. [banglajol.info]

In this report, we present a case report of an 18-year-old male having a talon cusp on palatally erupted mesiodens. [jorr.org]
We present the case of a 19 year-old girl who presented with a mesiodens of an unusual morphology and multiple impacted supernumerary teeth not associated with any syndrome. [ijdr.in]
If we combine the present case with those so far reported, there are 6 pairs of monozygotic twin brothers, and only 3 pairs of sisters. [webmedcentral.com]
Entire Body System
-
Soft Tissue Mass
It has a tendency to penetrate the cortex of jaw and present as an extra osseous soft tissue mass [6], [8]. [ijri.org]
-
Inflammation
Swelling of the upper lip can result from salivary tumor, regional infections inflammations and dentigerous cysts [3]. A cystic swelling of the hard palate may be the result of different kinds of cysts: odontogenic, non odontogenic or bone cysts. [ijri.org]

Treatment
Early diagnosis allows the most appropriate treatment, often reducing the extent of surgery, orthodontic treatment and possible complications. [cda-adc.ca]
The indication of surgical treatment of unerupted mesiodens is a widely accepted proposal that can avoid or reduce orthodontic treatment time. This guideline was followed in this case. [revodonto.bvsalud.org]
When this condition is discovered, the best treatment is to remove the extra tooth. [colgate.com]

Their diagnosis and management should form part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Treatment depends on the type and position of the supernumerary tooth and on its effect on adjacent teeth. [indjos.com]
Prognosis
[…] tuberculate (more than one cusp or tubercle) supplemental (duplication of a normal tooth) 55% grow in the downward position (35% are inverted and 7% are horizontal) most remain impacted but 25% will erupt (usually eumorphic or conical shape) Treatment and prognosis [radiopaedia.org]
It has a better prognosis than the extraction late. [bioaccent.org]
(male: female – 3.1:1) [12] Munns has stated that early the supernumerary tooth is removed better will be the prognosis. [13] The children in these cases were fit enough to tolerate a surgical procedure under local anesthesia. [srmjrds.in]

Etiology
The high degree of concordance observed seems to indicate that the sisters have avoided any significant effects of epigenetic origin, and their case provides evidence in favor of genetic factor in the etiology of mesiodentes. [webmedcentral.com]
Discussion Several theories have been proposed for the etiology of hyperdontia: theory of differentiation, theory of concrescence, post permanent theory, dichotomy theory and hyperactivity theory. [nature.com]
There is some geographical variation in prevalence ranging from 0.4% in Caucasians, 1.4% in Finnish and 2.2% in Hispanics. occur as single (85% of cases), multiple, unilateral or bilateral more commonly seen in permanent dentition than primary dentition Etiology [radiopaedia.org]
The etiology behind the development of these supernumerary teeth is not fully understood. Various etiological theories have been assumed for the development of supernumerary teeth. [orthodontics-endodontics.imedpub.com]

In these cases mesiodentes are prophylactically extracted to prevent its adverse effects on developing dentition. [orthodontics-endodontics.imedpub.com]
