Coarctation of the Aorta
These are most commonly VSDs which are associated with other cardiac defects (for example, Tetralogy of Fallot, coarctation of the aorta, etc.). Cases with multiple VSDs ("Swiss cheese" defects) are also harder to treat. [rxlist.com]
In particular, this technique provides a major advantage to patients who present in the neonatal period for repair of associated cardiac lesions, such as newborns with coarctation of the aorta with significant mVSDs. [annalspc.com]

Recurrent Respiratory Infections
Five infants (5/17 29.4%) required pre-operative mechanical ventilation, with a mean duration of 64 days (range 7–240 days), mostly due to the late referral for surgery from other institutions or to the presence of recurrent respiratory infections. [frontiersin.org]
Recurrent respiratory infections may also occur. With very large VSDs the features are similar but more severe. [patient.info]

Streptococcal Infection
Congenital heart disease is related to events occurring in the embryonal stage, while rheumatic heart disease is a sequela of immune-mediated damage following streptococcal infection. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Withdrawn
Then the other sheaf was withdrawn and the right disk was deployed. Monitoring with TEE showed that there was no residual shunting and that the disks were correctly positioned (Figure 2). [revespcardiol.org]
After the position of the device has been adjusted, the sheath is withdrawn further to allow the right ventricular (proximal) umbrella to open ( Fig. 2 D). [nejm.org]
It is shown mounted on the catheter into which it will be withdrawn during insertion. Most cases do not need treatment and heal during the first years of life. Treatment is either conservative or surgical. [en.wikipedia.org]
The device is secured in place and the catheter is withdrawn from the body. Within 6 months, normal tissue grows in and over the device. There is no need to replace the closure device as the child grows. [pediatricct.surgery.ucsf.edu]

Psychomotor Retardation
One patient has moderate pulmonary stenosis and one patient who made a cardiac arrest during his intensive care stay developed a psychomotor retardation. [academic.oup.com]
Workup
Chest radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and electrocardiography (ECG) may all provide useful information in the workup of a VSD. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Blocks
-
Incomplete Right Bundle Branch Block
Electrocardiographic evidence of combined ventricular hypertrophy and incomplete right bundle-branch block was noted in each instance. Right heart catheterization demonstrated marked pulmonary hypertension of the high-flow, low-resistance type. [circ.ahajournals.org]

Ventricular Hypertrophy
Electrocardiographic evidence of combined ventricular hypertrophy and incomplete right bundle-branch block was noted in each instance. Right heart catheterization demonstrated marked pulmonary hypertension of the high-flow, low-resistance type. [circ.ahajournals.org]
ECG While small VSDs will remain electrocardiographically occult, larger defects will classically demonstrate some of the following features 12 : left atrial enlargement high left ventricular voltage (HLVV) voltage criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy [radiopaedia.org]
In patients with large VSDs, left atrial dilatation, manifested by biphasic P waves in leads I, AVR, and V6 associated with right ventricular hypertrophy and left or right axis deviation may be seen. [ejcvsmed.org]
In those with pulmonary hypertension, right axis deviation, right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) and right atrial hypertrophy (RAH) may be seen. CXR CXR is normal in patients with small VSDs. [patient.info]
The channels might be small early after surgical repair of the conotruncal anomaly because of right ventricular hypertrophy and enlarge to become hemodynamically significant with regression of hypertrophy after right ventricular decompression. [annalspc.com]

Prognosis
Treatment and prognosis The prognosis is good for small VSDs which show a high spontaneous intrauterine or postnatal closure rate. [radiopaedia.org]
Prognosis The prognosis for a patient with an isolated VSD is excellent. Most small-to-moderate muscular VSDs can be expected to close spontaneously. [patient.info]
Significant independent variables contributing to the prognosis of PMVSD patients were evaluated using stepwise selection methods. [journals.plos.org]
Etiology

The precise etiology for the disruption of normal ventricular septation is not known, although both genetic and environmental factors have been implicated in the development of ventricular septal defects. [clinicaladvisor.com]
Epidemiology
Definition and Epidemiology A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a deficiency in the ventricular septum that can vary in size, number, or location on the septum. [accesssurgery.mhmedical.com]
(See Epidemiology.) When multiple muscular VSDs occur with a very large communication between the ventricles, it is also known as "Swiss cheese" VSD. [emedicine.medscape.com]

Epidemiology VSDs are the most common form of congenital heart disease. 1.5–5.7 per 1,000 term births 4.5–7.0 per 1,000 preterm births, by classic teaching Echo data show a higher incidence of 50 per 1,000 live births, mostly asymptomatic muscular VSDs [unboundmedicine.com]
Pathophysiology
Pulsed Doppler, continuous wave Doppler, and more recently, color flow mapping techniques have been used to study the pathophysiology, and to make quantitative measurements thereof. [books.google.com]
These associations play an important role in the pathophysiologic consequences of the defect, its long-term complications, and treatment options. [annals.org]
The proposed pathophysiological mechanisms in the development of traumatic VSD are early mechanical rupture and delayed inflammatory rupture. [onlinejets.org]
Pathophysiology Degree and direction of shunting between the right and left ventricles depend on size (restrictive or nonrestrictive) and balance between the systemic vascular resistance (SVR) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). [accesssurgery.mhmedical.com]
Pathophysiology Both the size of the VSD and the ratio of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) to systemic vascular resistance (SVR) determine the direction and amount of shunting. [unboundmedicine.com]
Prevention
Because it was only aimed at preventing reduction of the space between both coronary arteries (that would have resulted with a direct closure), it was important that the patch be narrow. [academic.oup.com]
In three instances difficulty in identifying all of the multiple fenestrations prevented complete surgical repair. Postmortem examination was done in six patients. [circ.ahajournals.org]
