Presentation
Causes Morton’s neuroma presents as the result of irritation or thickening of a plantar digital nerve located between the toes in the foot. [news-medical.net]
However neuromas can be present without clinical signs. One study reported neuromas present in 33% (19/57)[8] of asymptomatic individuals. [physio-pedia.com]
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate patients after excision of Morton’s neuroma at least ten years following surgery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Patients typically present with forefoot pain which radiates from midfoot to toes 5. Symptoms are often progressive and worsened by activity. [radiopaedia.org]
Entire Body System
- Asymptomatic
Treatment Overview Observation is recommended in patients with asymptomatic neuromas or in patients who are high risk for surgery. Observation includes regular MRIs. Surgery is the only way to remove the tumour completely. [healthengine.com.au]
Approximately 30% of asymptomatic middle-aged persons have radiologic findings of a Morton neuroma. Patients typically present with forefoot pain which radiates from midfoot to toes 5. Symptoms are often progressive and worsened by activity. [radiopaedia.org]
The prevalence of asymptomatic MN has been reported as 33%-54% when using ultrasound (US) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnosis[ 9, 10 ]. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Weakness
However, about two-thirds of people with large tumors will have some permanent weakness of the face after surgery. About one-half of patients with small tumors may still be able to hear in the affected ear after surgery. [nicklauschildrens.org]
Facial twitching or weakness can result from the tumor pressing on the facial nerve. This can cause twitching (tics or spasms) of the eye, eyebrow, forehead or mouth muscles. Less often, you might notice weakness in the face. [hopkinsmedicine.org]
Focus on arch height as an indication for foot failure is innately flawed; rather, foot strength or weakness is a more accurate indicator to measure foot health. [nwfootankle.com]
- Severe Pain

When this test is positive, the nerve gets squeezed and creates a clicking sound, and often severe pain in the foot. While this test often works well for well-established neuromas, it doesn't work in every case. [footdoc.ca]
- Burning Pain
Patients with Morton's neuroma often report a tingling sensation initially, which gradually worsens until it becomes severe and is subsequently described as a sharp, shooting or burning pain. [news-medical.net]
This thickening of the nerve leads to sensitivity and pain. Normally, there are no outward signs. Burning pain in the ball of the foot that may radiate into the toes is a common symptom. The pain generally intensifies with activity or wearing shoes. [murdochorthopaedic.com.au]
- Localized Pain
Lymph fluid fills the area between separated skin, causing local discomfort or pain. Condition Information Blistering of the skin may develop for numerous reasons. [nwfootankle.com]
Musculoskeletal
- Metatarsalgia
Metatarsalgia The word " metatarsalgia " literally means pain in the bones in the ball of the foot (the metatarsals), and so, it is really a vague term. It would probably be best described as a bruise to the metatarsal bones adjacent to the nerve. [footdoc.ca]
It may more correctly be known as Morton metatarsalgia. It most often occurs in middle-aged individuals and is many times more common in women than men. [radiopaedia.org]

The patient complains of a burning, tingling, slightly numb feeling ( dysesthesias ) which radiates out to the toes on either side of the interspace that is involved. [thesteadmanclinic.com]
There may be ongoing or periodic numbness and facial tingling on the side of the acoustic neuroma. Tingling (paresthesia) may be near the corner of the mouth or on the cheek. [hopkinsmedicine.org]
- Paresthesia
Several other clinical tests for Morton neuroma have been described, all of which have high specificity and aim to either reproduce symptoms of pain or paresthesia. [radiopaedia.org]
Burning, numbness, and paresthesia may also be experienced.[9] The symptoms progress over time, often beginning as a tingling sensation in the ball of the foot (Mulder’s Sign).[10] Morton's neuroma lesions have been found using MRI in patients without [physio-pedia.com]
Tingling (paresthesia) may be near the corner of the mouth or on the cheek. There may also be eye irritation or redness due to numbness in the eye that prevents appropriate blink reflexes. [hopkinsmedicine.org]

Other conditions that may also be visualized with ultrasound and can be clinically confused with a neuroma include synovitis/capsulitis from the adjacent metatarsophalangeal joint, stress fractures/reaction, and plantar plate disruption.[12][13] MRI can [physio-pedia.com]
Because the skull is a closed structure, excess fluid in the brain (hydrocephalus) can press against the brain, causing unsteady movement and lack of coordination (ataxia), headaches and confusion. [hopkinsmedicine.org]

Non-surgical Treatment In developing a treatment plan, your foot and ankle surgeon will first determine how long you’ve had the neuroma and evaluate its stage of development. Treatment approaches vary according to the severity of the problem. [montrosefootdoctor.com]
These patients often have other schwannoma-like tumors throughout the body, and treatments for these tumors are often different from the treatment for unilateral tumors. [hopkinsmedicine.org]
If this treatment fails, a cortisone injection into the nerve is occasionally helpful. Operative Treatment When conservative measures are unsuccessful, surgery can be a good choice in the treatment of Morton's neuroma. [thesteadmanclinic.com]
MN TREATMENT The treatment for MN should initially be conservative, including shoe modification, use of insoles and administration of antiinflammatory drugs. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
Prognosis Prognosis depends upon the size of the tumour and the extent of its growth. Most are fully resectable; however, some symptoms may remain post operatively. [healthengine.com.au]
Appears as a dumbbell/ovoid-shaped lesion at a similar position to that described on ultrasound 1,2,14: T1: typically low-to-iso signal T2: typically low signal but can sometimes be intermediate in signal T1 C+ (Gd): variable enhancement Treatment and prognosis [radiopaedia.org]
Outlook (Prognosis) An acoustic neuroma is not cancer. The tumor does not spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body. However, it may continue to grow and press on structures in the skull. [nicklauschildrens.org]

Many current recommendations for the treatment of plantar fasciitis are also misguided and reveal an inadequate understanding of the etiology of the condition. [nwfootankle.com]
Epidemiology
It is more likely that the transverse metatarsal ligament is the cause of the entrapment.[6][7] Epidemiology[edit | edit source] The onset of MN is usually between 45 and 50 years of age with women affected much more than men[8]. [physio-pedia.com]

In particular, aetiology, pathophysiology and treatment still are matter of controversy and there still is a lack of long-term follow-up data on surgical outcome. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prevention
Removing an acoustic neuroma is more commonly done for: Larger tumors Tumors that are causing symptoms Tumors that are growing quickly Tumors that are pressing on the brain Surgery is done to remove the tumor and prevent other nerve damage. [nicklauschildrens.org]
Symptoms The primary symptom of Morton’s neuroma is severe pain between the toes or at the base of one or both feet, which can prevent them from moving normally in some cases. [news-medical.net]
Cryogenic neuroablation (also known as cryo injection therapy, cryoneurolysis, cryosurgery or cryoablation) is a term that is used to describe the destruction of axons to prevent them from carrying painful impulses. [physio-pedia.com]
In addition, although profound block may be necessary in certain settings to prevent injury, the clinician cannot and must not assume that this technique is devoid of significant side effects. [journals.lww.com]
How do you prevent a neuroma? Wear good, supportive shoes. Avoid pointed toe boxes and high heels. If you have a foot that flattens excessively in stance, it is a good idea to get a proper early. [footdoc.ca]
