Presentation
Mutation in dopamine decarboxylase Which of the following clinical features is always present in OCA1 and are they present at birth? a. Coloboma and glaucoma, present at birth b. Cataract and glaucoma, present at birth c. [gwumc.edu]
The melanocyte is present in all individuals and is only rarely absent in some. [edoj.org.eg]
Many polymorphisms and variants of unknown significance are present in the genes. [nature.com]
In Caucasian individuals the amount of pigment present at birth varies from minimal to moderate. [patient.info]
Oftentimes, the nystagmus is not present at birth but develops between three weeks and eight weeks after birth. [visionofchildren.org]
Entire Body System
- Pain
Boils and carbuncles are generally inflamed, painful lumps. Compared with acne, boils are generally more painful, inflamed, and reddened around the border. Diagnosis Skin abscesses, boils, and related conditions are diagnosed by visual inspection. [andersondrugathens.com]
However, it isn't painful and doesn't get worse. Certain toys or games may help a child make the most of the vision they have. An ophthalmologist will be able to provide further advice. [nhs.uk]
This is called granulomatous colitis, and the medical problems include abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea in a child or an adult. [edoj.org.eg]
Photodysphoria (discomfort in bright light; as distinct from "photophobia," which is painful aversion of light associated with intraocular inflammation) is common among all individuals with OCA; however, the severity of discomfort varies and is not completely [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Fever
Initially, blood poisoning causes signs and symptoms such as chills, a spiking fever, a rapid heart rate, and a feeling of being extremely ill. [andersondrugathens.com]
- Swelling
Background An abscess is a collection of pus in any part of the body that is surrounded by swelling and inflammation. An abscess may develop, enlarge, or subside, depending upon the degree of infection by microorganisms, such as bacteria. [andersondrugathens.com]
Skin
- Macula
Linear SD-OCT scans through the central macula in two unaffected members (V:4, V:5) and six patients (IV:1, IV:4, IV:5, V:6, V:8, and V:10). Grade 4 foveal hypoplasia was not observed in any of the family members. [iovs.arvojournals.org]
Better vision is achieved in those without nystagmus, with measurable stereopsis, with some melanin pigment in the macula and with a rudimentary annular reflex in the macula. [patient.info]
Two major problems with the eye and ocular development include abnormalities in the development of the central vision area of the retina (called the macula or the fovea) and in the conduct of impulses from the retina through the optic nerve to the brain [visionofchildren.org]
It has been postulated that retinal pigment epithelial pigmentation around the macula is necessary for the normal development of the fovea. [emedicine.medscape.com]
- Piebaldism
OCA4 can only be distinguished from OCA2 through genetic testing, and is caused by mutation of the membrane-associated transporter protein (MATP) gene. [8] [10] Several German patients were identified in 2004. [11] See also Piebaldism List of cutaneous [ipfs.io]
Waardenburg Syndrome(WS) WS is an autosomal dominant disorder notable for patchy areas of depigmentation of the hair and skin in piebald-like distribution, heterochromia irides (pigment abnormality of the iris), and broad nasal root. [eyewiki.aao.org]
- Urticaria

Eyes
- Photophobia
Signs and symptoms include very fair skin, white hair, an increased risk for skin damage with sun exposure, reduced vision (sharpness), light colored irises, nystagmus, and photophobia (eyes are sensitive to light). [diseaseinfosearch.org]
Sunglasses aren`t a fad for people with albinism because they help fight photophobia; some items can completely block UV rays. [pregworld.org]
Photophobia Dark glasses or photochromic lenses are used for the discomfort of photophobia, although they do not appear to improve vision. [patient.info]
Photophobia or sensitivity to light Sunglasses, tinted glasses and wearing a wide-brimmed hat outside can help with sensitivity to light. Nystagmus There's currently no cure for nystagmus (where the eyes move from side to side involuntarily). [nhs.uk]
Clinical evaluation of the families segregating either TYR or OCA2 mutations showed nystagmus, photophobia, and loss of pigmentation in the skin or hair follicles. [chemsrc.com]
- Retinal Pigmentation
Retinal detachment due to instability of the retinal pigment epithelium c. Macular hole with vitreomacular traction d. Central serous chorioretinopathy e. [gwumc.edu]
Carrier females may show a characteristic mosaic pigmentation pattern of the retinal pigment epithelium. [egl-eurofins.com]

Neurologic
- Nystagmus
Congenital motor nystagmus. Congenital motor nystagmus is a phenotype that presents as infantile nystagmus associated with reduced visual acuity. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Nystagmus For nystagmus, eye muscle surgery can reduce the movement of the eyes. However, vision may not improve. [patient.info]
Will the nystagmus lessen with age? Generally, the nystagmus does dampen or reduce with time, especially after age 5-8 years. [visionofchildren.org]
Nystagmus There's currently no cure for nystagmus (where the eyes move from side to side involuntarily). However, it isn't painful and doesn't get worse. Certain toys or games may help a child make the most of the vision they have. [nhs.uk]

- Confusion
Mild forms of albinism are underdiagnosed and confused with other forms of early-onset, infantile nystagmus. 4. Sequence analysis detects variants that are benign, likely benign, of uncertain significance, likely pathogenic, or pathogenic. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Near-normal cutaneous pigmentation can lead to confusion with ocular albinism and the hair can develop a golden colour ('yellow albinism'). Very few freckles develop. Eyelash pigment is often darker than that of the scalp hair. [patient.info]
Individuals with red hair who have either OCA1 or OCA2 are also recognized, but the reddish-brown skin pigment is usually not present, and they should not be confused with rufous OCA. [edoj.org.eg]
But the condition can quickly progress to shock, which is marked by falling blood pressure and body temperature, confusion, clotting abnormalities and bleeding into the skin. Blood poisoning is a medical emergency and can be fatal if left untreated. [andersondrugathens.com]
Elejalde Syndrome (ES) Not to be confused with the acrocephalopolydactylous dysplasia, also known as Elejalde syndrome, this disease entity is synonymous with Neuroectodermal melanolysosomal disease [56]. [eyewiki.aao.org]

Treatments for eye problems due to albinism Although there's no cure for the eye problems caused by albinism, there are a number of treatments, such as glasses and contact lenses, that can improve vision. [nhs.uk]
Treatment Self treatment : Most simple boils can be treated at home. Ideally, the treatment should begin as soon as a boil is noticed. Early treatment may prevent later complications. [andersondrugathens.com]
A high priority has been placed on the ease of extracting key information quickly: diagnostic algorithms and management ladders help the reader choose appropriate treatment strategies. [books.google.com]
No treatment for the lack of pigmentation is available but visual function may be improved with the help of low vision aids. [disorders.eyes.arizona.edu]
Prognosis
Diagnosis and Prognosis: It is likely that pediatricians will make the diagnosis of albinism and this can be confirmed by an ophthalmologist based on the eye findings. [disorders.eyes.arizona.edu]
Prognosis Visual prognosis in patients with albinism is quite variable. Usually, no improvement in visual acuity occurs in patients with type I oculocutaneous albinism. [emedicine.medscape.com]
(Please describe) A specific molecular diagnosis can be helpful for prognosis, that is, as to degree of hypopigmentation and risk of visual impairment. [nature.com]
Prognosis Lifespan, development, intelligence, and fertility in patients with OCA are not different from unaffected patients. [eyewiki.aao.org]
Prognosis Growth, development and intellectual development in the child are normal. Vision is invariably severely impaired [ 2 ]. A spectrum of structure and function exists in albinism. [patient.info]
