Presentation
Safe use of granisetron as an antiemetic after skin prick, oral, and intravenous challenge tests is presented. We present this case to emphasize that ondansetron hydrochloride may cause a serious anaphylactic reaction. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Intravenous Administration
RESULTS: 49 studies are included with a total of 53 drugs. 15 drugs were found compatible administered with ondansetron in a clinical routine concentration range in intravenous administration. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
2 minutes through a peripheral intravenous catheter Active Comparator: Promethazine Promethazine 10 mg intravenous administration Drug: Promethazine 12.5 mg intravenous dose administered over 2 minutes through a peripheral intravenous catheter Placebo [clinicaltrials.gov]
Psychiatrical
- Impulsivity
Tourniquet pain is thought to be mediated by impulse propagation via small, unmyelinated, slow-conducting C fibers. The duration of the tourniquet time is directly proportional to the onset of tourniquet pain. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Neurologic
- Akathisia
Patients in adjunctive ondansetron therapy also experienced significantly lower incidence and severity of parkinsonism and akathisia as well as fewer behavioral hyperactivity, cardiac, and gastrointestinal side effects. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
However, in adults, promethazine is less effective than prochlorperazine. 24 Data from adults suggest that drowsiness (38 percent) 24 and akathisia (44 percent) 25 are common adverse events. [doi.org]
- Encephalopathy
We treated a patient who developed transient multifocal encephalopathy with extrapyramidal symptoms (oromandibular dystonia, oculogyric crisis, and limb dystonia) in temporal proximity to ondansetron administration on emergence from general anesthesia [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Decerebrate Posturing
Upon emergence from an uneventful general anesthetic, the patient exhibited cogwheel rigidity with decerebrate posturing and a markedly irregular respiratory rate. This prohibited extubation and prompted an unplanned intensive care unit admission. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Workup
Undergone standardised workup to exclude the following alternative diagnoses 5.1. Microscopic colitis (colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy) 5.2. [isrctn.com]
Treatment
CONCLUSIONS: A single dose of ondansetron is superior to bromopride and metoclopramide in preventing vomiting six hours and 24h following treatment. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Anti-nausea - 24 mg 30 minutes before treatment, then 8 mg every 8 hours. Film - 8 mg 30 minutes before treatment, then 8 mg every 8 hours. Children 4-11 take 4 mg 30 minutes before treatment, 4 mg 8 hours later, then 4 mg every 8 hours. [md-health.com]
If this treatment is started early enough then further treatment may not be needed. [pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk]
Etiology
We relate a patient who presents with hypokalemia of unknown etiology, with evidence suggesting a possible relationship to ondansetron. We also present a proposed mechanism for this phenomenon. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Liver failure and death have been reported in patients with cancer receiving potentially hepatotoxic/cytotoxic chemotherapy and antibiotics ; however, the etiology of liver failure is unknown. [ Ref ] Common (1% to 10%): Asymptomatic increases in AST/ [drugs.com]
In a negative control analysis, we assessed the risk of malformations in women who filled their first ondansetron prescription in gestational months 5 to 8, which is after the etiologically relevant window. [jamanetwork.com]

However, palonosetron was more efficacious than ondansetron in the prevention of vomiting after laparoscopic surgery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
