Paragonimus Caliensis

Presentation

In the present study, molecular, morphological and phylogenetic tools have been used to characterize two populations of Paragonimus located at west of Medellin, Antioquia and at Pichinde, Valle del Cauca (type locality of P. caliensis), Colombia. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Thus, the present study is the first to confirm that the crab species H. guayaquilensis is the second intermediate host of P. mexicanus in Manabí Province, Ecuador. [parasitol.kr]

Treatment

Treatment involves taking the prescription medications triclabendazole or praziquantel. Potentially Infected Food Raw or undercooked freshwater crab or crayfish can contain Paragonimus. [verywellhealth.com]

Then, the amplicons with or without enzymatic treatment were separated by electrophoresis on 2% (w/v) agarose gels. [parasitol.kr]

Once the diagnosis is made, effective treatment for paragonimiasis is available from a physician. Image: Left: Eggs of Paragonimus sp. taken from a lung biopsy stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). These eggs measured 80-90 µm by 40-45 µm. [cdc.gov]

Etiology

Abstract The trematode Paragonimus mexicanus is the etiological agent of paragonimiasis, a food-borne zoonotic disease in Latin America. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

When told of this finding in one of his former patients, Patrick Manson suspected that this fluke might be the etiology of the benign hemoptysis be encountered so often in his practice in Amoy, China. [info.isradiology.org]

Epidemiology

The confirmation of P. caliensis as a separate species from P. mexicanus raises several questions about the ecology, biological diversity, and epidemiology of the genus Paragonimus in Costa Rica. Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention

The dissemination and familiarization of the results of the present study by the public health government agencies is important for implementing preventive measures or programs. [parasitol.kr]
