OBJECTIVE: To determine the change in the clinical presentation of inflammatory paranasal sinus disease as a function of a patient's age. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Recurrent Sinusitis
Ten patients with histories of chronic or recurrent sinusitis underwent coronal CT studies of the paranasal sinuses before and after the application of a topical vasoconstrictor. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Recurrent sinusitis may require surgery to improve sinus drainage. [merckmanuals.com]
Recurrent sinusitis happens several times a year. Who Gets It? Lots of people. About 35 million Americans have sinusitis at least once each year. [webmd.com]
complicated sinusitis, recurrent acute sinusitis, failed medical management of acute sinusitis, fungal sinusitis • obstructive nasal polyposis • sinus mucoceles • remove foreign bodies • tumor excision, transsphenoidal hypophysectomy • orbital decompression [alpfmedical.info]
- Pathologist
Biopsy : The removal of cells or tissues so they can be viewed under a microscope by a pathologist to check for signs of cancer. [northshore.org]
Cancer grading is a microscopic issue; the pathologist determines the degree of aggressiveness of the cancer. [encyclopedia.com]
A speech pathologist treats: Voice loss Swallowing disorders Impaired speech Your speech pathologist will help you regain as much of your speech and swallowing as possible. [mskcc.org]
Fungal infections are usually diagnosed by such biopsy procedures and tissue removed by a surgeon, or by fungal culture and microscopic identification by a microbiologist or pathologist trained to identify fungi. [medicinenet.com]
Respiratoric
- Sore Throat
throat earache fever Sinusitis can either be acute or chronic. [healthline.com]
The following symptoms may indicate a sinus infection in your child: a "cold" lasting more than 10 to 14 days sometimes with low-grade fever thick yellow-green nasal drainage post-nasal drip, sometimes leading to or exhibited as sore throat, cough, bad [childrensenthouston.com]
Post nasal drip is mucus overproduction from sinusitis that flows to the throat and irritates throat tissue. Sore throat is inflammation of throat tissue by post nasal drip. [medicinenet.com]
Drainage, therefore, drips constantly down the back of the throat, resulting in a continuously sore throat and bad breath. Diagnosis Diagnosis is sometimes tricky, because the symptoms so often resemble those of an uncomplicated cold. [medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com]
- Snoring
Two of these patients had facial swelling and 2 had nasal obstruction and presented as snoring. Two patients presented with history of weight loss and these patients had malignant tumour of the paranasal sinuses. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The patient shows difficulty in nasal breathing, which will therefore be associated with oral breathing, nocturnal snoring, frequent episodes of rhinitis and, in some cases, sinusitis, favoured by poor ventilation, which in turn determines one continuous [mariobussi.com]

- Nausea
No nausea or vomiting (anorexia may occur) 2. No more than 1 of photophobia or phonophobia E. Not attributed to another disorder A. At least 5 attacks fulfilling criteria B-D B. [care.american-rhinologic.org]

Radiation also may cause nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and urinary discomfort. There may also be a decrease in white blood cells, which are needed to fight infection. [encyclopedia.com]
Ask you if you’ve had any problems with anesthesia in the past, including nausea or pain. Talk with you about your comfort and safety during your surgery. Talk with you about the kind of anesthesia you will have. [mskcc.org]
Face, Head & Neck
- Epistaxis
The most common symptoms of paranasal sinus cancers include: Nasal: A persistently blocked nose or bleeding per nose (epistaxis) Oral: loose teeth or dentures, bleeding from upper teeth sockets, swelling in the roof of the mouth, oral pain, or trismus [skullbaseinstitute.com]
[…] air-fluid levels, opacification, and bone destruction • high rate of false positives and false negatives to evaluate for chronic sinusitis CT of Paranasal Sinuses • Indications: severe acute sinusitis, medical failure of chronic sinusitis, diagnosis of epistaxis [alpfmedical.info]

It causes non-specific symptoms like nasal congestion or epistaxis. Biopsy is necessary to make the diagnosis and because more than 10% of inverted papillomas harbor a squamous cell carcinoma. [radiologyassistant.nl]
Typically, this benign, vascular, locally invasive neoplasm occurs in pubescent males, presenting with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. [sajr.org.za]
Neurologic
- Dizziness
Signs and symptoms include headache, nasal discharge, swelling in the face, dizziness, and breathing difficulties. [icd10data.com]
These may be accompanied by a slight rise in temperature, dizziness, and a general feeling of weakness and discomfort. [medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com]
Workup
If sinusitis is not found to be present, the otolaryngologist must help the patient understand this point, reassure him or her that the otolaryngologist will still be vigilant for the development of sinusitis, and refocus the history and workup for some [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
They are less common in the other sinuses and typically do not require additional workup or follow-up. 9 Polyps, on the other hand, may become more extensive and problematic, leading to obstruction and osseous remodeling. [jaocr.org]
Treatment
Subjects (n = 40) were randomly allocated to treatment either with isotonic Ems salt solution or with isotonic sodium chloride solution. The treatment consisted of endonasal irrigation twice daily and additional nasal spray as required. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
Here, we describe a series of patients that presented with CNVI palsy, their management, and prognosis for recovery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis for sixth nerve palsy arising from paranasal sinus disease. [arizona.pure.elsevier.com]
We retrospectively studied the prognosis of patients who had optic nerve blindness due to paranasal sinus disease. During the past 10 years, we identified 17 patients with optic nerve disease and posterior paranasal sinus disease. [karger.com]
Etiology
Abstract The paranasal sinuses of 20 consecutive young adult patients with a complete Bell's palsy were investigated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to obtain more information on the etiology of the disease. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
A wide range of literature describes myriad causes for CNVI palsy, but there is a lack of references that point to paranasal sinus pathology as an etiology, as well as the prognosis and timeline for resolution. [arizona.pure.elsevier.com]
In certain circumstances, the etiology of these two causes may be found within the nasal cavity itself. Septal deviation and inferior turbinate hypertrophy have been found to contribute to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in some people. [care.american-rhinologic.org]
Force duction test can distinguish between the causes of which the results of the test will be positive if the etiology is due to mechanical restrictions. [transbiomedicine.com]

Pathophysiology
Abstract The enhanced understanding of the pathophysiology of cystic fibrosis (CF) has advanced significantly the management of this disorder, resulting in both an increased longevity and an improved quality of life. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Introduction Pathophysiology • Anatomical (compromised patency of ostia causes hypooxygenation and impairment of sinus drainage) • Dysfunction of Cilia Motility • Change in Quality of Secretions • Immune Dysfunction Pathogens Acute • Viral: rhinovirus [alpfmedical.info]

Prevention
Prevention/Solution As the old adage says, “Prevention is the best medicine.” Preventing paranasal sinus disease is similar to preventing other types of illnesses. Make sure to wash your hands frequently, especially before eating. [healthfully.com]
