Presentation
We report a case in a 10-year-old boy who presented with rectal bleeding and a single rectal polyp. Histologic examination, immunophenotyping and molecular genetic study of the polyp showed a diffuse B-cell lymphoma, Burkitt-like type. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Most data indicate that polypoid carcinomas (which have no residual adenomatous tissue) do not spread and therefore do not require segmental resection unless poor prognostic features are present. [aboutcancer.com]

- Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
The present study tested whether a novel, enteric-coated formulation of EPA, as the free fatty acid (EPA-FFA), has chemopreventative efficacy in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Multiple polyps may represent familial adenomatous polyposis. About 25% of patients with cancer of the large bowel also have satellite adenomatous polyps. Adenomatous (neoplastic) polyps are of greatest concern. [msdmanuals.com]
In familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), cancer inevitably develops 10-20 years after the initial appearance of colonic polyps. [emedicine.medscape.com]
These individuals may suffer from hereditary disorders such as Lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Garner’s syndrome, MYH-associated polyposis (MAP), Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, or serrated polyposis syndrome. [westvalleycrs.com]

Sometimes bleeding polyps can cause fatigue and other symptoms of anemia (low levels of red blood cells). On rare occasions, a large polyp can cause diarrhea or secretion of large amounts of potassium. [drugs.com]

If cancerous lesions are advanced, additional symptoms such as weight loss, a change in the caliber of stools, a sense of rectal fullness, or constipation may be experienced. Diagnosis requires evaluation with colonoscopy. [emedicinehealth.com]
The index of suspicion for Crohn's disease is increased by a history of episodes of diarrhea, abdominal cramping and weight loss, and the appearance, location and multiplicity of the fistulas. [aafp.org]
When tumors are advanced, unexplained anorexia, weight loss, a change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or obstruction, can occur. 72 The absence of symptoms in the early stages of the disease stresses the importance of asymptomatic screening. [clevelandclinicmeded.com]
- Severe Pain
Exposed nerves and vessels result in moderate to severe pain. Pain worsens with bowel movements then decreases in between bowel movements. [emedicinehealth.com]

What is rectal bleeding (Hematochezia)? Rectal bleeding is a symptom of a problem in the GI tract. [emedicinehealth.com]
Polyps of the gastrointestinal tract are common cause of rectal bleeding in toddlers and preschoolers, but this is not so in neonates. Herein, we report a prolapsing rectal polyp causing massive lower gastrointestinal bleeding in a newborn. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Signs include tenesmus, hematochezia, and diarrhea. The polyp is usually palpable per rectum and bleeds easily with surface ulceration. Periodically, the polyp may prolapse through the anal orifice. [merckvetmanual.com]

Bleeding can be frank hematochezia but is often chronic and goes unnoticed by the patient. If uncompensated, intestinal blood loss can cause anemia, typically due to iron deficiency. [emedicine.medscape.com]

Abdominal cramps, pain, or obstruction of the intestine occur with some large polyps. Certain types of polyps cause mucous-filled or watery diarrhea. [medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com]

The rectal prolapse may often be confused with haemorrhoidal prolapse, but invagination of rectal wall caused by tumours rarely appears through the anus [ 1 - 4 ]. [omicsonline.org]
The proximal end of the fissure may contain granulation tissue that is often confused with an anal polyp. The area around the fissure becomes sclerotic and appears white. [aafp.org]

Workup
See Workup for more detail. Management Polypectomy In patients with a solitary or a few pedunculated or sessile polyps, colonoscopic removal can be performed concurrently with the search for other lesions. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Colonoscopy
- Polyps
A diminutive rectal polyp amidst internal hemorrhoids, detected by rectal retroflexion during colonoscopy, was shown to harbor invasive rectal adenocarcinoma by colonoscopic biopsy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
TREATMENT Removal of colorectal polyps is advised because there is no test to determine if one will turn into cancer. Nearly all polyps can be removed or eliminated during a colonoscopy. Large polyps may require more than one treatment. [fascrs.org]

EPA-FFA treatment led to a mean 2.6-fold increase in mucosal EPA levels (p=0.018 compared with placebo). EPA-FFA was well tolerated with an incidence of adverse events similar to placebo. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
That said, treatment may include polyp removal during the initial or follow-up screening using a wire loop or biopsy forceps. Minimally invasive surgery that involves a coagulating current or surgical excision may also be considered for treatment. [westvalleycrs.com]

What is the prognosis of rectal polyps? People with a history of polyps have an increased risk of developing polyps again in their lifetime and should have regular exams by a physician specially trained to treat diseases of the colon and rectum. [annapoliscolon.com]
PROGNOSIS AFTER TREATMENT Once a colorectal polyp is completely removed, it rarely comes back. However, at least 30% of patients will develop new polyps after removal. [fascrs.org]
Prognosis Polyps are common. But less than 1% of all polyps ever become cancerous. By removing polyps, the risk is even lower. Survival depends on the stage of cancer. [drugs.com]
Treatment and prognosis Because of the benefits of screening, screening studies (usually colonoscopy) are recommended at age 50 for men and women. The actual screening program depends on the patient's region and risk factors, however. [radiopaedia.org]
