Presentation
A 32-year-old male Mexican immigrant presented with a history of worsening anasarca. The patient had initially been seen at our institution 5 months prior with generalized swelling and was started on prednisone for a nephrotic syndrome. [academic.oup.com]
Because of safety, ease of use, and the information provided, the most commonly used radiographic technique in patients presenting with renal disease is renal ultrasonography. [statpearls.com]
POEMS syndrome should be suspected in a patient presenting with peripheral neuropathy of unknown origin, refractory ascites or peripheral edema, and unexplained gynecomastia or organomegaly. [ajkd.org]
Often, if anasarca is present, it is a sign of severe organ damage or illness. Share on Pinterest Anasarca is a symptom of a condition, and may be diagnosed with a physical assessment. [medicalnewstoday.com]

Swelling
The patient had initially been seen at our institution 5 months prior with generalized swelling and was started on prednisone for a nephrotic syndrome. Approximately 4 days into the admission, the patient had significant abdominal pain. [academic.oup.com]
The swelling is obvious, and the skin may look shiny and stretched. Sometimes, swelling is so extreme that a person has difficulty moving. Swelling can become so severe that fluid will leak out directly from the skin. This is known as weeping edema. [medicalnewstoday.com]
Everyone experiences swelling in their bodies from time to time. It can occur due to: menstruation pregnancy medication diet dehydration overhydration injury another underlying medical condition This type of swelling is called edema. [healthline.com]
Introduction Edema is defined as a palpable swelling on the body produced by expansion of the interstitial fluid volume. [statpearls.com]

Pain
Approximately 4 days into the admission, the patient had significant abdominal pain. An ascites culture was positive for Citrobacter freundii. Antibiotic treatment was initiated for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. [academic.oup.com]
If you’re experiencing the above symptoms plus shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or chest pain, seek emergency treatment immediately. These can be signs of pulmonary edema, which is a fluid buildup inside the lungs. [healthline.com]
Two months later, the patient was admitted to the emergency department reporting pleuritic chest pain and dyspnea. Blood pressure was 110/70 mm Hg, and oxygen saturation was 94%. [ajkd.org]
Signs of pulmonary edema include chest pain, shortness of breath, and coughing. A doctor can usually make a diagnosis of anasarca after a physical exam; and if the edema is severe, a doctor can often recognize it instantly. [medicalnewstoday.com]
