Presentation
Although most cases of nasal mucocele present within weeks of rhinoplasty surgery, exceptional accounts describe nasal mucoceles presenting years after rhinoplasty. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Swelling
Swelling and bruising will be noticeable after surgery and will persist for a few days to a few weeks. Some swelling of the nasal tissues may continue for several months. [mdface.com]
Swelling in the tip of the nose takes the longest to resolve.Although you will see significant improvement after 4-6 weeks, it can take up to a year or more for the swelling in the tip of the nose to complete resolve in order to see the final result. [midessaofs.com]
Initial swelling will decrease several weeks after the procedure, but it may take a full year before all signs of swelling are gone. The shape of the nose may change in very subtle ways during this time. Dr. [drdevlin.com]
This is a result of intranasal swelling and as the swelling subsides, the breathing improves. Your face will feel puffy, especially the first day after surgery. Some patients develop swelling and/or bruising around the eyes. [aafprs.org]
The results of rhinoplasty become gradually apparent as the days pass after surgery and swelling recedes. Swelling may reappear from time to time in the first year after the procedure. [drjenniferwalden.com]
- Pain
The hemi-split Doyle splint causes less pain during removal and particularly does not lead to dehiscence of incisions made during alar base surgery in rhinoplasty patients. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Most patients report little or no pain after nasal surgery, and any discomfort is easily controlled with mild pain medication. [aafprs.org]
You have sudden chest pain and shortness of breath, or you cough up blood. Call your doctor or nurse call line now or seek immediate medical care if: You have pain that does not get better after you take pain medicine. [myhealth.alberta.ca]
You will probably be lightly sedated, but awake during the surgery (relaxed and not feeling pain). General anesthesia allows you to sleep through the operation. The surgery is usually done through a cut (incision) made inside the nostrils. [medlineplus.gov]
- Ecchymosis
The Piezosurgery group revealed significantly more favorable outcomes in terms of edema, ecchymosis, and hemorrhage on the first day postoperatively (p < 0.001 for all). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
During the first 24 hours after surgery, some edema (swelling) might occur, in the face, the eyelids and the nose, together with some ecchymosis; real pain does not normally arise. [domenicodefazio.it]
Persistent edema: Initial edema and periorbital ecchymosis may last 10 days. [emedicine.medscape.com]
- Severe Pain
You should contact the clinic where the operation was carried out as soon as possible if you have severe pain or any unexpected symptoms. [nhs.uk]
Report any bleeding, severe pain or unusual symptoms to your surgeon, including sudden nosebleeds. You may need to be off work for around two weeks. [betterhealth.vic.gov.au]
Respiratoric
- Nasal Congestion
Rhinoplasty Recovery During the recovery period after a rhinoplasty, bruising and swelling usually occur as well as nasal congestion (a stuffy nose). [hkcenters.com]
Nasal congestion mild.Change mustache dressing as needed (often 10 to 20 times). DAY 2-5 Nasal stuffiness is main problem. DAY 5-7 Internal nasal splints removed by Dr. Ducic. Stuffiness and nasal congestion much better. [drducic.com]
Most patients describe nasal congestion to be the main complaint postoperatively. Who do you emulate in your practice? I have a variety of people who have influenced me through there approach to their work. [shahfacialplastics.com]
- Rhinitis
Persisting nasal blockage may be related to vasomotor rhinopathy or unmasked allergic rhinitis. Patients who fail to respond to medical measures may require surgical turbinate debulking if causative. [emedicine.medscape.com]
- Rhinorrhea
Gustatory rhinorrhea: Parasympathetic and sympathetic cross-excitation as a result of misdirected regeneration of nerve fibers subsequent to the trauma of surgery may cause rhinorrhea during eating. [13] The treatment of this condition is difficult, but [emedicine.medscape.com]
- Pharyngitis
A flexible laryngeal mask airway device (LMAD) embedded with 2 pharyngeal suction catheters was used for a young female patient who underwent a revision rhinoplasty, septoplasty, and chin implant. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Skin
- Erythema
Symptoms included pain, swelling, erythema and eventual loss of vision in the left eye. Intravenous administration of antibiotics did not halt the rapid progression of this infection. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Transplantation of dermis however, carries the risk of cyst or erythema formation if de-epithelialisation is incomplete. Alloderm ®, a homologue acellular dermis transplant, has been used for augmentation and camouflage. [egms.de]
Eyes
- Periorbital Ecchymosis
TXA had a statistically significant effect on the eyelid edema (P = 0.03), periorbital ecchymosis (P = 0.04), and surgeon satisfaction (P = 0.03). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Persistent edema: Initial edema and periorbital ecchymosis may last 10 days. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Face, Head & Neck
- Epistaxis
These include (but are not limited to): Complications of anesthesia Epistaxis (nosebleed) Septal perforation (hole in internal wall of nose) Unsatisfactory appearance: over-removal of tissue, under-removal of tissue, asymmetries (sides looking different [care.american-rhinologic.org]
In some cases, since no swab is used, epistaxis (nosebleed) might occur, but it normally stops quickly and gives no special problems. If this occurs, it is recommended to inform the surgeon. [domenicodefazio.it]
Neurologic
- Headache
We report a case of a 58-year-old woman who had augmentation rhinoplasty 20 years ago suffered from headache for over a year. Brain lesion and neurologic causes were ruled out by neurologists and physician in family medicine. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
For those who experience headaches, a computed tomography (CT) scan would be ordered. The available surgical options and the referring doctor’s recommendations will be reviewed, including the limitations and risks of surgery. [uhhospitals.org]
Headaches are common. The nasal packing is usually removed in 3 to 5 days, after which you will feel more comfortable. The splint may be left in place for 1 to 2 weeks. Full recovery takes several weeks. Healing is a slow and gradual process. [medlineplus.gov]
During this period, you may experience some nasal pain or a dull headache, as well as some bleeding and drainage from your nose. Most patients are comfortable enough to return to regular activities in about a week. [orseckmd.com]
- Agitation
This patient's symptoms appeared to be a result of postanesthesia agitation. The patient's symptoms resolved after 1 week. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Workup
The preoperative workup as well as perioperative steps for excision are documented, with the hope that this will assist other practitioners with this approach. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prognosis
Outlook (Prognosis) Full recovery takes several weeks. Healing is a slow and gradual process. The tip of the nose may have some swelling and numbness for months. You may not be able to see the final results for up to a year. [owensborohealthse3.adam.com]
Etiology
The history, etiology, and prevention of mucocele formation in rhinoplasty surgery also are discussed. This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Epidemiology
Electrodiagnostic Medicine Electroencephalography Endocrinology Endoscopic Surgery Eye Institute Family Medicine Gastroenterology General Surgery Geriatrics Geriatric Psychiatry Gynecologic Oncology Gynecology Hand Surgery Hematology & Oncology Hospital Epidemiology [plasticsurgeryspringfieldil.com]
Epidemiology Frequency According to the literature, the complication rate for nasal surgery varies from 4-18.8%. In individual hands, this rate generally falls as surgical experience accumulates. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Prevention
The risk factors, etiology, clinical course, recovery potential, and preventive measures are analyzed and discussed. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
