Presentation
In our case review of brain abscess due to E. avium ( Table 1 ), we found that 5 of 6 patients presented with chronic otitis media, and only 1 patient, who was previously diagnosed with astrocytoma, did not present with otitis media [ 10 ]. [icjournal.org]
This case illustrates the potential for significant mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and endobronchial and parenchymal lesions caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria, which can present insidiously and without respiratory symptoms in otherwise healthy infants [miami.pure.elsevier.com]
Our patient presented with all of these features, resulting in a significant intestinal obstruction. The physiopathological mechanisms of DMAC disease could explain the clinical presentation of our patient. [scielo.br]

Treatment
Standard anti-tuberculosis treatment and methylprednisolone (1 mg/kg/day) were started. [archbronconeumol.org]
Older patients are less likely to receive treatment than younger patients, which probably reflects poor tolerability or adherence to the current treatment regimen for MAC-LD in older patients. [erj.ersjournals.com]

Prognosis
Little is known regarding the prognosis of untreated stable MAC-LD. [erj.ersjournals.com]
What should you tell the family about the patient’s prognosis? Hemoptysis: Patients with SGM pulmonary infections may develop hemoptysis. Concurrent or recurrent infections with other bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are common. [infectiousdiseaseadvisor.com]
Etiology
Among the infectious etiologies, Streptococcus pyogenes and tuberculosis have been the most common triggers. [journals.lww.com]
Although E. avium is not commonly associated with brain abscesses, it should be considered as an etiological agent in the future, especially in patients diagnosed with chronic otitis media. [icjournal.org]

Mycobacterial infection was suspected, although other etiologies such as sarcoidosis or pneumonitis associated with methotrexate could not be ruled out. Standard anti-tuberculosis treatment and methylprednisolone (1 mg/kg/day) were started. [archbronconeumol.org]
No further invasive procedures were performed to confirm the etiology of the pericardial effusion. After this initial period, the patient began to lose weight; then, he underwent a medullar aspirate that revealed abundant acid-fast bacilli. [scielo.br]

In sequential inoculation experiments an established biofilm of P. aeruginosa did not prevent biofilm formation by M. avium. The growth of M. avium and P. aeruginosa was similar whether they were inoculated as base or invading species. [scholarworks.montana.edu]
