- Malaise
The most common findings are fever (usually sustained, but with temperature no greater than 102 °F (39 °C)), pale appearance, malaise, painless liver enlargement, jaundice, enlarged lymph nodes, and enlarged spleen. [en.wikipedia.org]
In the pediatric population, the acute phase symptoms are fever, anorexia, malaise, nausea and/or vomiting. The main signs are pallor, hepatomegaly, lymphadenopathies, cardiac murmur, and jaundice. [scielo.br]
He recorded the clinical features which developed, including fever, malaise, arthralgia, vomiting and anaemia, and it became apparent that he had developed the anaemic, febrile, acute phase of the illness (known as Oroya fever). [rcpe.ac.uk]
The most common findings are bleeding of verrugas, fever, malaise, arthralgias, anorexia, myalgias. [wikidoc.org]

- Angiomatosis
Virtually identical angiomatous lesions (bacillary angiomatosis) are seen in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and are caused by the genetically related B. henselae. [nejm.org]
Bacillary angiomatosis may result in lesions in the skin, under the skin, in bone, or in other organs. Bacillary peliosis causes sores in the liver and spleen. Bacillary angiomatosis. Used with permission of NEJM. [cdc.gov]
Bacillary angiomatosis and peliosis hepatis Both B. henselae and B. quintana may cause bacillary angiomatosis, which most often occurs in HIV-positive patients. [ 6 ] Patients should therefore have HIV antibodies and CD4 lymphocyte counts checked. [patient.info]
The histopathology of Peruvian Wart must be differentiated from that of skin cancers, hemangiomas, pyogenic granulomas, and Bacillary Angiomatosis [1,8]. [doi.org]
- Skin Lesion
The most common cause of vascular skin lesions in Zambia is Kaposi sarcoma, and an initial consideration in this case was the possibility that the skin lesions and the systemic febrile illness were unrelated. [hivinsite.ucsf.edu]
lesions known as “Peruvian warts”; and an asymptomatic form found in carriers, people who are infected but exhibit no clinical signs or symptoms. [isglobal.org]
Skin lesions, called Verruga Peruana, are most commonly miliary in nature with multiple 1-4 mm papular, erythematous round lesions that are often pruritic. Image C shows an example from our files. [uab.edu]
Tissue sections were stained (Gram, Giemsa) and revealed bacterial clusters of within the skin lesions as well as blood vessels within the same skin lesions. [interamericaninstitute.org]

- Suggestibility
Since then, numerous outbreaks have been documented in endemic regions, and over the last two decades, outbreaks have occurred at atypical elevations, strongly suggesting that the area of endemicity is expanding. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
It is suggested that the prognosis may be improved by the use of adequate blood transfusions and the prophylactic use of antibiotics to control intercurrent infection. At present there is no specific agent against bartonella bacilliformis anemia. [bloodjournal.org]
The high antibiotic susceptibility of B. bacilliformis suggests that mass treatment could lead to the elimination of the illness in some areas, and to a significant decrease of disease carriers in others. [idpjournal.biomedcentral.com]

Treatment
There are nationally standardized treatments for the acute phase, which consist of ciprofloxacin, and alternatively chloramphenicol plus penicillin G. However, most of the treatments are based on evidence from reported cases. [scielo.br]
The treatment was initiated with oral ciprofloxacin (500 mg BID) for 10 days. On the fifth day of treatment there was a decrease in the size of the miliary lesions. The patient was released and returned five days after completing treatment. [doi.org]

Prognosis
Bartonella bacilliformis anemia has a very severe prognosis, due largely to the occurrence of intercurrent infection by enteric organisms. [bloodjournal.org]
Prognosis Usually self-limiting. Trench fever re-infection may occur within 3-6 months because antibodies do not give full protection. [patient.info]
The finding of anasarca appears to serve as a marker of a poor prognosis, because 3 of those 6 patients died. [doi.org]

Epidemiology
Carrion's Disease constitutes a health problem in Peru because its epidemiology has been changing, and it is affecting new areas between the highland and the jungle. [scielo.br]

Although initially Oroya fever was epidemiologically associated with ticks (13), it rapidly became evident that phlebotomine sandflies (particularly Lutzomyia verrucarum) were the vectors. [freethesaurus.com]
