Presentation
At the present time our data suggest a low tick-borne rickettsiosis incidence of MSF and a superior incidence of TIBOLA than MSF in the Spanish Mediterranean area. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Rickettsia is a genus of nonmotile, gram-negative, nonspore-forming, highly pleomorphic bacteria that can present as cocci (0.1 μm in diameter), rods (1–4 μm long), or thread-like (10 μm long). [igenex.com]

Entire Body System
- Acutely Ill Patient
Here we report the amplification of DNA of R. heilongjiangensis from both the skin biopsy of an acutely ill patient and the tick removed from him prior to the disease development. The tick has been identified as Haemaphysalis spp. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Skin
- Sweating
Fever, fatigue, dizziness, sweating, myalgia, arthralgia and loss of appetite have also been reported (13). [medicaljournals.se]
A previously healthy 30-year-old man (a friend of patient 1) developed high fever, night sweats and headache in May 2007 followed by a maculopapular rash involving the palms 10 days later. [plosntds.org]
The mural and perivascular infiltrates comprised predominantly lymphocytes, macrophages, and occasional neutrophils ( figure 3C ), and similar inflammatory infiltrates often involved sweat glands, small nerves, and subcutaneous fat. [doi.org]

Neurologic
- Convulsions
RMSF may result in various neurological manifestations, including deafness, convulsions, and hemiplegia. [dx.doi.org]

For example, untreated spotted fever rickettsiosis may lead to encephalitis, shock, seizures, gangrene, and/or acute respiratory or renal failure within a week of becoming sick. 4 Untreated Lyme disease may cause arthritis as well as various neurologic [alabamapublichealth.gov]
- Ataxia
By comparison, 75% of patients with classic RMSF are hospitalized; 75% have peak temperatures >40°C (almost one-half have peak temperatures ⩾40.5°C) [ 22 ]; ∼25% develop stupor, delirium, ataxia, or coma; and the aggregate case-fatality rate derived from [doi.org]

- Hyponatremia
R. rickettsii also causes a systemic vasculitis, hyponatremia, shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), renal failure, meningoencephalitis and neurologic sequelae. The overall case fatality rate is 5%-10%. [aappublications.org]

Hyponatremia, hypoalbuminemia, and hepatic and renal abnormalities may also occur ( 276 ). The specific methods for the diagnosis of rickettsioses have been recently reviewed ( 174 ). TABLE 2. [dx.doi.org]

Microbiology
- Rickettsia Conorii
Until recently, it was thought that Mediterranean spotted fever due to Rickettsia conorii was the only tick-borne rickettsiosis in Europe. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Rickettsia Akari
Other causes of spotted fever group rickettsioses (spotted fevers) in the United States include: Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis, caused by R. parkeri Pacific Coast tick fever, caused by Rickettsia species 364D Rickettsialpox, caused by Rickettsia akari [cdc.gov]

Therefore, a high suspicion of RMSF is essential, and treatment should be started as soon as RMSF is suspected. [mdedge.com]

Moreover, the recognition of typhus group rickettsiosis is clinically and epidemiologically relevant, as these infections may be associated with a worse prognosis than spotted fevers ( Dumler et al., 1991 ; Bechah et al., 2008). [doi.org]
Etiology
We also assess the pathogenic potential of rickettsial strains that to date have been associated only with arthropods, and we discuss diseases of unknown etiology that may be rickettsioses. [cmr.asm.org]
