Presentation
Manganese poisoning presents clinically with parkinsonian-like symptoms and psychological changes. Seizures are a rare presentation of this disease. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Immune System
-
Massive Splenomegaly
We present a unique case of massive splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and lymphadenopathy caused by lipid-laden macrophages in a 50 year old white female with short-bowel syndrome treated with long-term total parenteral nutrition. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
-
Noncompliance
Noncompliance and an inability to discontinue TPN earlier increase the likelihood of complications. Discontinuation of parenteral support requires an assessment of gastrointestinal anatomy and absorption capacity. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
-
Lymphadenopathy
We present a unique case of massive splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and lymphadenopathy caused by lipid-laden macrophages in a 50 year old white female with short-bowel syndrome treated with long-term total parenteral nutrition. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
-
Intravenous Drugs
The purpose of this study was to obtain Y-site compatibility data on intravenous drugs and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) relevant for children. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
-
Hypoxemia
Pulmonary function tests showed severe ventilatory defects, arterial hypoxemia, and decreased oxygen saturations. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Respiratoric
-
Pleural Effusion
Comparison of the pleural effusion analysis and the content of the parenteral nutrition led to the final conclusion that the effusion was due to a leakage of parenteral nutrition instead of chylothorax. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Skin
-
Skin Lesion
She was found to have hypozincemia and eventually exhibited prompt resolution of skin lesions after zinc was added to TPN. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Neurologic
-
Dysarthria
Two months later, she developed dysarthria and muscular weakness, and could not maintain her posture. The level of serum selenium was extremely low. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Workup
Serum
-
Prothrombin Time Normal
Serum liver enzyme levels and prothrombin time normalized in the 5 months following ISBTx. Liver biopsy showed marked steatosis, slight cholestasis, and mild bridging fibrosis before ISBTx. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Pleura
-
Pleural Effusion
Comparison of the pleural effusion analysis and the content of the parenteral nutrition led to the final conclusion that the effusion was due to a leakage of parenteral nutrition instead of chylothorax. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Biopsy
-
Liver Biopsy
Liver biopsy showed marked steatosis, slight cholestasis, and mild bridging fibrosis before ISBTx. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
After this treatment, nine of the 25 patients were readmitted for recurrence of appetite loss. Two patients required additional TPN treatment, but seven immediately recovered their appetite after hospitalization without TPN treatment. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
(PCI) was not associated with survival, low CA-125 within one week of GT placement was associated with improved survival (p CONCLUSIONS: Women with malignant bowel obstructions from gynecologic cancers requiring palliative GT placement had a guarded prognosis [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Etiology
This case illustrates the difficulty in establishing etiology in some patients and the effectiveness of total parenteral nutrition plus octreotide therapy in idiopathic chylous ascites in HIV-infected patients. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Epidemiology
Additional case reports should be directed to the Epidemiology Branch, Division of Epidemiology and Surveillance, Office of Epidemiology, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Food and Drug Administration, Room 15-42, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rock- ville [cdc.gov]
Pathophysiology
The pathophysiology is postulated to be multifactorial. Diagnosis in adults is primarily by exclusion, eliminating other causes of chronic liver disease or cirrhosis, and other factors seen in critically ill or postoperative patients on TPN. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention
An awareness of the factors that influence crystal solubility may prevent adverse interactions in patients who require parenteral nutrition. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
This complication can be prevented by monitoring the client and adjusting the rate of the total parenteral nutrition to prevent fluid overload. [registerednursing.org]
