Presentation
We present 2 cases of tracheal disease misdiagnosed as difficult-to-treat asthma. After systemic evaluation, tracheomalacia and tracheobronchial narrowing due to diffuse calcification of the cartilaginous rings were found as mimicking asthma. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Symptoms of tracheal stenosis can be present shortly after birth or develop after an acute injury to the trachea. Affected children may present with rapidly worsening symptoms in the face of an upper respiratory infection. [chop.edu]
[…] pediatric patients presenting with symptoms concerning for CTS. [pediatrics.aappublications.org]
There are two forms of this condition: Acquired - caused by an injury or illness after birth Congenital - present since birth Most cases of tracheal stenosis develop as a result of prolonged breathing assistance known as intubation or from a surgical [cedars-sinai.edu]
Malacia is not present. Rarely, a single localized submucosal nodule is present, resulting in eccentric wall thickening. Multiple isolated lesions also may be seen. [slideshare.net]

They reinforce the wall and prevent the collapse of the trachea during in and expiration. The cartilage rings are open to the dorsal wall of the trachea, which is also called paries membranaceus or membranous wall. [flexikon.doccheck.com]
- Amyloidosis
There are 3 forms of amyloidosis: diffuse interstitial deposits, single or multiple pulmonary nodules, and, most commonly, submucosal tracheobronchial deposits. 11 Submucosal tracheobronchial deposits usually exhibit calcification. 12 Amyloidosis is differentiated [rc.rcjournal.com]

- Swelling
This can cause infection, inflammation, and rapid swelling. Because of the small size and position of your child’s trachea, even mild swelling can quickly block their airway. [healthline.com]
This medicine will reduce the swelling in your child's airways very quickly. The effect lasts for about four hours. After four hours, the swelling may come back and your child may have problems breathing again. [aboutkidshealth.ca]
Prostatitis is swelling and soreness of the prostate gland and may be due to a bladder infection. It is more common in young men. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is when the prostate gets gradually larger, usually starting in middle age. [continence.org.au]
- Chronic Infection
Prolonged intubation, tracheostomy, external trauma, emphysema, and chronic infections are the most common etiological factors in adult tracheobronchomalacia. 18 Many of these conditions create segmental involvement of the airway, whereas chronic infections [rc.rcjournal.com]

- Cough
Tracheobronchomalacia Tracheobronchomalacia is a condition that occurs when the airways collapse during breathing or coughing. [mskcc.org]
The patient will present with a history of coughing, which may be characterized as a “goose honk.” The cough will occur when the patient is excited or under heavy activity, although in some extreme cases the cough will be constant. [vscvets.com]

They can also cause coughing of blood. [brighamandwomens.org]
The most common symptoms of tracheobronchomalacia are dyspnea, wheezing, cough, and sputum production. [rc.rcjournal.com]
- Stridor
In mild croup, your child may have stridor only when crying or coughing. If croup gets worse, your child may also have stridor when relaxed or sleeping, and may have trouble breathing. [aboutkidshealth.ca]
Symptoms include: Noisy breathing (stridor) Recurring pneumonia Wheezing Cyanosis (blue-spells) Apnea (breathing pauses) Chest congestion Imaging. [chop.edu]
Stridor and moderate obstructive ventilatory changes characterized by an upper airway obstructive pattern were observed. [archbronconeumol.org]
People with tracheal and bronchial tumors may experience the following symptoms: shortness of breath or difficulty breathing coughing, sometimes with blood (known as hemoptysis) wheezing stridor, a high-pitched musical sound that occurs as the breath [mskcc.org]
The initial signs are a loud inspiratory noise (stridor) and the onset of dyspnea. Forced movement causes the respiratory distress to worsen. [msdvetmanual.com]
- Hoarseness
However, you may exhibit one or more of the following: Wheezing Stridor (a high-pitched, musical breathing sound) Shortness of breath Difficulty breathing/respiratory distress Coughing Hoarseness Frequent upper respiratory infections, such as pneumonia [brighamandwomens.org]
[…] with blood (known as hemoptysis) wheezing stridor, a high-pitched musical sound that occurs as the breath is drawn in, which is caused by a blockage in the airways Those with more advanced disease may experience difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) and hoarseness [mskcc.org]
Your child may develop a hoarse voice, barking cough or a high pitched wheezing sound when they breathe in (stridor). This is especially likely in younger children, because their airways are smaller. [aboutkidshealth.ca]
AMYLOIDOSIS • rare • Symptoms - hoarseness, stridor, dyspnea, cough, hemoptysis, and recurrent infections. • Primary tracheobronchial amyloidosis - usually confined to the airways, with no evidence of concurrent parenchymal disease. • Deposits are multifocal [slideshare.net]
Symptoms may include cough, strider, wheeze, hoarseness, weight loss as well as hemoptysis. [ispub.com]

Symptoms may include cough, strider, wheeze, hoarseness, weight loss as well as hemoptysis. [ispub.com]
Hemoptysis is generally associated to epithelial tumors in an advanced stage. A severe obstruction may occur when the percentage of stenosis is one third or a half of the total lumen [ 16 ]. [raredisorders.imedpub.com]
- Sputum
The most common symptoms of tracheobronchomalacia are dyspnea, wheezing, cough, and sputum production. [rc.rcjournal.com]
These presentations are usually triggered by the partial or complete occlusion of the abnormal airway by sputum or haemorrhage. [jtd.amegroups.com]
Because of progressive airway obstruction due to severe tracheobronchial collapse together with increased sputum production due to reduced mucocilliary clearance, nightly CPAP therapy was started with a significant reduction in work of breathing and improvement [ojrd.biomedcentral.com]

Neck and chest CT scan allowed diagnosing an intraluminal tracheal mass of about 1 cm located at the medium third of the trachea and right paratracheal lymph nodes, in addition to left multiple pulmonary nodules and a right lung nodule. [raredisorders.imedpub.com]
Treatment
Surgical Treatment Tracheal resection and reconstruction, a surgical method that removes the constricted section of the trachea and rejoins the upper and lower sections. This treatment often has excellent long-term results. [brighamandwomens.org]
Treatments There are several treatment options that can be used for tracheal stenosis and the type of treatment used will depend on the cause, location and severity of the tracheal narrowing. [cedars-sinai.edu]

Prognosis
[…] a poorer prognosis in case of lymph node involvement. [raredisorders.imedpub.com]
Misdiagnosis followed by prolonged mismanagement negatively impacts the prognosis and subsequent mortality of patients (2,3). [ispub.com]
Creation of a tracheal surgery database to study outcomes and prognosis of patients with airway problems with the goal of improving patient outcomes. Research into possible tracheal substitutes involving regenerative medicine and stem cells. [massgeneral.org]
This is due to the better long term prognosis of individuals with benign pathology, the difficulty removing airway stents, and the reported complications of their use. [jtd.amegroups.com]
Etiology
The etiology is unknown. Proposed causes include respiratory viruses and bacteria, trauma to the trachea from feed bunks, passive congestion and edema from excessive fat accumulation in the thoracic inlet, hypersensitivity reactions, and mycotoxins. [msdvetmanual.com]
Tracheal stenosis is a relatively uncommon problem that has a variety of etiologies. It frequently has an insidious onset, and the early signs and symptoms may be disregarded or mistaken for a variety of other disorders. [tracheotomy.info]
Malignancy is the number one cause for exudative effusions, but they can also be caused by infectious etiologies. Or things such as autoimmune processes like pancreatitis, or traumatic injuries resulting in a chylothorax. [coursera.org]
