Presentation
We present a case of a 20-year-old college student who had myositis ossificans traumatica develop after a fraternity hazing. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Pain
The patient was struck repeatedly on both of his thighs while standing at attention, and he presented with bilateral thigh pain and stiffness 6 weeks after the incident. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The pain is concentrated along the surface (no deep internal pain) and is tender to the touch but not the same level of pain as when I use the associated muscle. [medhelp.org]
If MO develops, the graded restoration of flexibility and strength with minimal pain becomes the goal of rehabilitation. [bjsm.bmj.com]
These symptoms include a noticeable lump or ‘woody’ feeling in the belly of the injured muscle, an increase in morning pain, pain with activity or night pain and a clinical history demonstrating an initial improvement in range of movement followed by [physioadvisor.com.au]
- Swelling
There may be localized tissue hyperaemia, swelling and tenderness to palpation. [bhj.org.in]
The patient had a history of trauma due to fall, which resulted in swelling on the left side of his face. The swelling was initially firm, but gradually hardened over a period. [sjmms.net]
Swelling;-Localised swelling on the anterior thigh or in some cases it may be in the whole limb. [physio-pedia.com]
Two weeks before the World Championship, after an intense training session, she developed an exuberant swelling on the cubital fossa and brachial region, restricted ROM (loss of 70° on elbow extension), without history of trauma during that session. [bjsm.bmj.com]
- Inflammation
The patient was treated with physical therapy and indomethacin for pain and inflammation control. At his 1.5-year followup, the patient's left knee flexion had improved to 130 degrees. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Initially, after a muscle injury, aggressive stretching should be avoided, as this can increase bleeding or inflammation. [sportsmedtoday.com]
Gianfortune, De- Rehabilitation of myositis ossificans in the brachialis muscle., DPM De Carlo MS, Sell KE., Misamore GW, Carrell KR Theories on the etiology, management of myositis Myositis ossificans means muscle inflammation with bone formation. [yxohynukix.wapgem.com]
The inflammation around the joint area gives sharp pain on taking a breath. This can also cause tenderness on pressing the area which pains. An orthopedic doctor can diagnose this for you. Generally there is no cause. [medhelp.org]
Myositis means inflammation of muscle, and ossificans means bone. A contusion to the arm or thigh causes bleeding, and a clot of blood (hematoma) forms, usually within the muscle. This hematoma then may become bone. [checkorphan.org]
- Surgical Procedure
Perfect your technique with the visual guidance of nearly 2,500 full-color illustrations and 60 videos of pediatric surgical procedures, including a number that highlight clinical examination and unusual clinical findings. [books.google.com]
However, participation in high-impact sports or undergoing certain surgical procedures may place some individuals more at risk than the others In majority of cases, MOC occurs within a muscle, which is termed Intramuscular Myositis Ossificans Circumscripta [dovemed.com]
Biopsies can be performed as a surgical procedure or can be done through a needle inserted into the mass. [verywell.com]
- Weakness
By the time bone formation has occurred, symptoms may include a palpable lump in the muscle, range of motion that is more restricted than it should be, weakness of the muscle, and ongoing pain. [physiopartners.com]
The usual presentation is mononeuropathy, pain, variable weakness, and a palpable mass along the nerve distribution. A paucity of literature exists on this disorder. [healio.com]
In addition, the patient had experienced weakness when biting and chewing, which had endured for more than two years. [spandidos-publications.com]
Respiratoric
- Aspiration
A group of 7 patients with this lesion was treated with hematoma aspiration and injection of steroids, lysosomal enzymes, and xylocaine, resulting in significant limitation of disability. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Haematoma aspiration was not performed, no NSAIDs were given and she started a 3 day rehabilitation program that included immobilisation of the muscles in slight tension with compression, ice and elevation. [bjsm.bmj.com]

- Fracture
We describe three cases of traumatic myositis ossificans in which fractures occurred through a mature, quiescent ossification mass. None of the fractures reactivated the original pathological process, no callus was formed and union did not occur. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Our patient also complained of bilateral numbness to the nasolabial region and cheek.A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed fractures to the nasal bones, associated 1, 2 and 3 Le Fort fractures, right paramedian lower jaw, bilateral zygomatic fractures [jmedicalcasereports.biomedcentral.com]
However, this is also the most common site of involvement in patients with a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, and has also been descri- bed after an avulsion fracture, and also has been reported as associa- ted with contact sports or those at risk [dialnet.unirioja.es]
