Presentation
Transvaginal deligation of complete obstruction after delayed presentation has not been described. We present two cases of ureteral ligation after pelvic reconstructive surgery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Sepsis
We report a case of a 50-year-old diabetic woman presenting with acute renal failure, sepsis, and bilateral ureteral obstruction. Initial management included bilateral percutaneous nephrostomy tubes. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Weight Loss
Over a period of six months, the patient had developed new-onset tiredness, difficulty working, and gastrointestinal complaints characterized by daily vomiting, intermittent generalized abdominal pain, and a six-pound weight loss. [renalandurologynews.com]
CASE REPORT A 56-year-old Korean woman presented with a 3-month history of fever, weight loss and generalized myalgia. From 6 weeks before hospitalization, the myalgia had worsened and progressive proximal muscle weakness developed. [kjim.org]
During the patient’s medical history interview, he referred to chronic lumbar pain but no weight loss. [jmedicalcasereports.com]
- Ascites
Ascites is a common sequela of neonatal obstruction syndrome. In cases of acute obstruction, a postobstructive diuresis following relief of the problem is well described. [emedicine.medscape.com]
- Recurrent Infection
Such a kidney warrants nephrectomy if it is associated with any of the following- intractable pain, stone disease, haematuria, recurrent infection, uncontrolled hypertension, malignancy, tuberculosis or large hydronephrotic kidney liable to trauma. [bioline.org.br]
Gastrointestinal
- Left Flank Pain
A 45-year-old male admitted to our clinic of symptoms with moderate left flank pain and intermittant macroscopic hematuria. During the last 6 months these complaints had worsened. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Cardiovascular
- Hypertension
[…] or exacerbation of preexisting hypertension. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Musculoskeletal
- Low Back Pain
Case presentation We report a case of a 65-year-old Berber man with clinically significant storage, bladder-emptying symptoms and bilateral low back pain with renal biologic failure and bilateral ureterohydronephrosis, distal ureteral stenosis, detrusor [jmedicalcasereports.com]

- Prolapse
No recurrence of genital prolapse was observed at gynecological examination. Laparoscopy can be a wise alternative option to manage ureteral obstruction secondary to vaginal colposuspension for genital organ prolapse. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The most common causes of ureteral obstruction include: Vascular disease Conditions of the female reproductive system, such as pregnancy, endometriosis and uterine prolapse Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, such as Crohn's disease, inflammatory [umassmemorialhealthcare.org]

In women, it tends to be related to pelvic tumours (particularly gynaecological malignancies), prolapse of pelvic structures, or pregnancy. [patient.info]
Urogenital
- Flank Pain
A 45-year-old male admitted to our clinic of symptoms with moderate left flank pain and intermittant macroscopic hematuria. During the last 6 months these complaints had worsened. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Anuria
Few reports exist in which unilateral renal obstruction is associated with anuria (reflex anuria, RA) and acute renal failure. [karger.com]
We report a case of anuria in an 11-year-old boy five days after surgery for a perforated acutely inflamed appendix. No abscess was found with CT. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Soon after, complete anuria necessitating haemodialysis developed without pain or evidence of infection. CT imaging revealed stones obstructing the right ureter. [casereports.bmj.com]
- Incontinence
Ureteral injury after pelvic floor surgery and anti-incontinence surgery is a well-known risk. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
[…] reflux see vesicoureteral reflux. ureteral rupture rupture usually results from trauma; leads to urinoma or peritoneal accumulation of urine. ureteral stasis synonymous with obstruction. ureteral valves a rare anomaly that may be a cause of urinary incontinence [medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com]
This may be the cause of continuous urinary incontinence in females. In boys, all of the wolffian structures are located above the external urinary sphincter, and incontinence does not occur. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Among the medical conditions treated by this practice and treatment options it offers are the following: Kidney stone disease Prostate cancer Benign prostate disease Bladder cancer Testicular cancer Kidney cancer Female urinary incontinence Male sexual [urology.wustl.edu]
- Kidney Failure
Severe cases can lead to permanent kidney damage. Since only one kidney is affected, kidney failure generally doesn’t occur. Kidney failure is a life-threatening condition that develops when both kidneys stop working. [healthline.com]
If both kidneys are obstructed, kidney failure may result. [merckmanuals.com]
You may need dialysis or a kidney transplant if there is damage to both kidneys and they do not function, even after the blockage is repaired. Obstructive uropathy can cause permanent and severe damage to the kidneys, resulting in kidney failure. [nlm.nih.gov]
- Dysuria
A 34-year-old female presented with dysuria and urinary hesitancy. The diagnosis, workup, and treatment are outlined. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Persistent hematuria, severe dysuria, pain and insufficient drainage were reported to occur in half (n = 7) of the studied population. Inadequate drainage of the MS in bulky pelvic tumors was also reported. [indianjurol.com]
There were 1 patient with dysuria, 1 with fever, 4 with urinary frequency, and 5 with hematuria for polymeric stents, and there were 1 patient with dysuria, 3 with fever, 1 with flank pain, 3 with urinary frequency, and 6 with hematuria for metallic stents [journals.plos.org]
Workup
The diagnosis, workup, and treatment are outlined. Consistent with radiographic findings, the stone was a primary vaginal stone which eroded into the bladder, the nidus of the stone being a vaginal foreign body. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
[…] providing insufficient utility as a single diagnostic test in the evaluation of children suspected of having VUR, such as those presenting with prenatal hydronephrosis or urinary tract infection (UTI).[2] VCUG is the method of choice for grading and initial workup [en.wikipedia.org]
This modality provides the same information as IVP without depending on renal function and can be used when the risks of IVP are considered too great Ultrasonography – This is the procedure of choice for determining the presence of hydronephrosis See Workup [emedicine.medscape.com]
Treatment
Complications with this type of treatment, particularly ureteral obstruction, are rare. Very few patients with delayed obstruction have been reported in the literature. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
Patients with malignant ureteral obstruction generally have a poor prognosis and are often difficult to treat. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment and prognosis Treatment depends on the underlying cause. In a majority of congenital cases, the condition is benign, and usually, no intervention is required. [radiopaedia.org]
Surgery is not required in all prenatally detected cases. [17] Prognosis [ edit ] The prognosis of hydronephrosis is extremely variable, and depends on the condition leading to hydronephrosis, whether one (unilateral) or both (bilateral) kidneys are affected [en.wikipedia.org]
Etiology
We also performed a secondary comparative analysis of patients with a benign vs malignant etiology of obstruction. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
It may present in both pediatric and adult populations although they tend to have differing etiology. The estimated incidence in pediatric populations is ~1 per 1000-2000 newborns, and there is a male predominance (M:F = 2:1). [radiopaedia.org]
Epidemiology
METHODS: Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare database, we identified patients aged 65 or older with stage IV (n = 10,848) or recurrent (n = 7,872) prostate cancer. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Epidemiology Age Urinary tract obstruction occurs most commonly in the young and the old: In older men, this is a relatively common condition due to prostatic enlargement: Incidence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTs)/BPH averages 15 per 1,000 man-years [patient.info]
Pathophysiology
Decreased production of osmolytes in complete obstruction better elucidates the pathophysiology of progression from renal compensatory mechanisms to irrecoverable changes. [xlink.rsc.org]
Tubular proteinuria has been observed following unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), suggesting megalin dysfunction; however, the pathophysiological mechanism has not been determined. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
