Vallecula Cancer

Presentation

We are presenting a case of carcinoma vallecula who after the treatment of the primary in base of tongue presented with findings suggestive of pleural metastasis. We are discussing this unusual presentation with a relevant literature review. [jcdr.net]

In conclusion, the present study presents the successful surgical treatment of a rare MEC in the vallecula. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

The most common presenting symptoms include a visible or palpable mass, local pain, dysphagia, or a palpable neck mass. These tumors are often clinically silent and are often quite advanced at presentation. [radiologykey.com]

Treatment

“I had thirty-five radiation treatments which were a little intimidating, but everything went well and I actually began to miss the people here when I was finished with my treatments.” Related [gettysburgcancercenter.com]

This rise is probably due to recent advances in both curative and palliative treatment of the primary site (4). This has allowed these patients to survive even when presenting in the later stages of the disease. [jcdr.net]

Extensive resection with free margins is the recommended treatment for MEC lesions (5). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prognosis

The clinical prognosis of MECs is not well characterized, however, certain studies have suggested that MECs should be recognized as high-grade malignancies with a poor prognosis (4). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

It is important to differentiate the tongue base from the oral tongue because the anatomic subsite, lymphatic drainage, treatment, and prognosis are distinctly different. [radiologykey.com]

Epidemiology

Chapter 57 Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tongue Base/Valleculae Epidemiology The tongue base is located posterior to the oral tongue. [radiologykey.com]

Prevention

In order to prevent such complications, a sternohyoid myofascial flap was used to reconstruct the tongue base. No evident complications were noted following surgery, and the patient was free of recurrence for 18 months following surgery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
