Sepsis
[…] cerebellar impairment would preclude consideration of a diagnosis of CANVAS, particularly in the absence of a positive family history. 4 An example of cases seen is that of a posterior fossa decompression for a Chiari malformation with postoperative sepsis [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Dysesthesia
Less commonly, they may present with dysesthesias or oscillopsia 1-3. [radiopaedia.org]
These include dysphagia, cough, autonomic dysfunction (such as postural hypotension), somatic allodynia, and dysesthesia. 5 Clinically possible canvas Clinical evidence of bilateral vestibular hypofunction is most commonly ascertained via the assessment [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Positive Romberg Sign
All patients showed gait and limb ataxia, positive Romberg sign, cerebellar dysarthria, gaze-evoked nystagmus, absent deep tendon reflexes, and impaired vibratory sensation. [moh-it.pure.elsevier.com]
Sensory ataxia is distinguished from cerebellar ataxia by the presence of near-normal coordination when the movement is visually observed by the patient, but marked worsening of coordination when the eyes are shut, indicating a positive Romberg's sign [en.wikipedia.org]
A neurological examination revealed absent ankle reflexes, wide-based stance, a positive Romberg sign, and a markedly ataxic gait that required bilateral support. Plantar responses were flexor. [cambridge.org]

MRI Scan showing Cerebellar Atrophy
MRI scans showed cerebellar atrophy in 16, involving anterior and dorsal vermis, and hemispheric crus I, while 2 were normal. The inferior vermis and brainstem were spared. Conclusions: Sensory neuropathy is an integral component of this syndrome. [n.neurology.org]

Treatment
The chapter summarizes the features, pathophysiology, and treatment of congenital nystagmus; periodic alternating nystagmus; and acquired fixation nystagmus. [onlinelibrary.wiley.com]
When specific treatments are available, such as in the Arnold Chiari malformation, they are used when the risk of treatment appears less than leaving the condition alone. [dizziness-and-balance.com]
Treatment A person with ataxia may need help walking. There is not usually a cure for ataxia, but treatment can ease symptoms and help improve quality of life. [medicalnewstoday.com]

Prognosis
The prognosis varies, but CANVAS is generally considered to be a slowly progressive condition over decades 3. [radiopaedia.org]
What is the prognosis for ataxia? Ataxia is the sign of an underlying disease or illness and the prognosis depends upon the response to treatment of that underlying cause. [rxlist.com]

The epidemiology is yet to be defined, but CANVAS is thought to be rare. It often first manifests in middle-aged adults 1. [radiopaedia.org]

Prevention
Can ataxia be prevented? Since ataxia is the sign of an underlying disease, it may not necessarily be preventable. However, avoiding external causes of ataxia (environmental chemicals and toxins) may prevent some individuals from developing ataxia. [rxlist.com]
