Presentation
Entire Body System
- Pain
In these cases, surgery is indicated only when blindness and pain or severe proptosis intervene. However, all such patients should be followed radiologically for evidence of posterior extension. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Neurologic
- Nystagmus
A Unique Case of Sporadic Optic Pathway Glioma in an Infant With Acute Nystagmus. Knight CT, Rana HN, Standley T. Knight CT, et al. Cureus. 2021 Aug 30;13(8):e17568. doi: 10.7759/cureus.17568. eCollection 2021 Aug. Cureus. 2021. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
Visual prognosis is fair, and the outlook for life depends upon tumor location. When initially confined to the optic nerve alone, overall mortality is about 5%. Once the hypothalamus is involved, mortality rises sharply to over 50%. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Epidemiology
Cited by Occurrence of Second Primary Malignancies in Patients With Primary Optic Nerve Gliomas: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Analysis. Hussain Z, Khan J, Saeed A, Dihowm F. Hussain Z, et al. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prevention
When the chiasm is threatened, surgical excision via a craniotomy approach is warranted to prevent subsequent hypothalamic or third ventricle involvement. Malignant optic glioma is a distinct disease primarily affecting middle-aged adults. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
