Warthin Tumor
Warthin's Tumor

Presentation

This case report presents a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in Warthin's tumor in the parotid gland. A 16-year-old female presented with a painless lump in right pre-auricular region. [jomfp.in]

Here, we are presenting a case of a 70 year old chronic smoker male patient who presented with bilateral painless swelling in the parotid region. [omicsonline.org]

Case presentation A 69-year-old Japanese man presented with a right parotid tumor. He had noticed the swelling on his right buccal region 1 year previously; the lesion had rapidly enlarged, with associated pain, 1 month previously. [jmedicalcasereports.biomedcentral.com]

The tumor presented on the right and left sides with the same frequency. Only 2 patients suffered from a bilateral disease (2.63%). A painless facial mass was the most common presenting symptom (97.3%). [hoajonline.com]

MECs patients were followed up for 25–69 months after surgery, presenting no evidence of recurrence or metastasis. Collectively, MECs arising from WT is very rare. [nature.com]

[…] extremely uncommon for them to reach the overlying skin. 9) Other factors that arise the possibility of skin ulcer formation include ischemic changes, accidental external skin damage such as shaving, compression the overlying skin, an insect bite, and malnutrition [kjorl.org]

Respiratoric

  • Pharyngitis

Warthin proposed the origin to be heterotopic pharyngeal endoderm [ 8 ]. [omicsonline.org]

In 1910, Albrecht and Arzt reported two tumors of the upper neck region which they interpreted as confused tissue in the entodermal pharyngeal anlage, particularly that of salivary glands, in the lymph nodes. [atlasgeneticsoncology.org]

Skin

  • Insect Bite

bite, and malnutrition. 11) In our case, the inflammatory process crossed the parenchyma of the parotid gland, capsule, soft tissues, and overlying skin. [kjorl.org]

  • Skin Ulcer

[…] of Warthin's tumor with skin ulceration should be considered. [kjorl.org]

Neurologic

  • Neglect

It is impossible to predict the occurrence of such extensive inflammatory changes in the parotid gland after FNAB of a Warthin's tumor. 5) Besides the history of FNAB, neglecting the tumorous lesion, which was not surgically treated for several years [kjorl.org]

Workup

Diagnosis Laboratory studies Hematologic and serologic tests are of little importance in the workup of salivary gland tumors. [emedicine.medscape.com]

The interprofessional team should perform an exhaustive preoperative workup to minimize postoperative complications of surgery. This will result in a better patient outcome. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Other ECG Findings

  • Ischemic Changes

However, it is extremely uncommon for them to reach the overlying skin. 9) Other factors that arise the possibility of skin ulcer formation include ischemic changes, accidental external skin damage such as shaving, compression the overlying skin, an insect [kjorl.org]

Treatment

Surgical treatment is considered the treatment of choice in most patients [ 2 ]. Surgical treatment is preferred not because of the tumor's aggressiveness, but rather because of uncertainty regarding the preoperative cytological accuracy. [hoajonline.com]

Treatment / Management The optimal treatment of Warthin tumor relies on surgical removal, which can be easily realized due to the superficial location of the tumor. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

This case report presents the clinical findings, imaging examination, treatment and postoperative progress. [oatext.com]

Treatment may consist of surgery to remove the tumor or careful observation to watch for changes in the tumor over time. [1] [2] [3] Last updated: 9/8/2015 [rarediseases.info.nih.gov]

Prognosis

Treatment and prognosis They are benign with an extremely low incidence of malignant transformation (~1%). Some advocate surgical excision while others favor conservative management with follow-up imaging. [radiopaedia.org]

Previous studies have shown that the presence of lymphocytic stroma in many thyroid tumors is associated with favorable prognosis, probably explaining its good clinical behavior. [2], [4] Warthin-like tumor should be differentiated from other oncocyte [ccij-online.org]

Lymphoepithelial cysts Prognosis Warthin’s tumor has a favorable prognosis and almost never recurs. Malignant degeneration of Warthin tumor is very rare. In such cases, a close follow-up of the patients is mandatory so as to detect metastases. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

The long-term prognosis is not clear, however, as patients have been reported to be disease free after about one year's follow-up. 1. Huvos AG, Paulino AF. Salivary glands. In: Diagnostic surgical pathology. In: Stenberg SS, editors. 3rd ed. [jomfp.in]

Etiology

Its etiology remains controversial.[1] Etiology The etiology of Warthin tumor has not yet been fully established. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Etiology Several studies showed that a significant number of patients suffering from Warthin's tumor are smokers, in contrast to patients with other salivary gland tumors. [atlasgeneticsoncology.org]

Incidence and Etiology Approximately 2500 new cases of salivary gland neoplasms are diagnosed each year. Parotid neoplasms account for 80% of salivary neoplasms. [emedicine.medscape.com]

Discussion The etiology of the malignant transformation of the epithelial component of Warthin’s tumor remains unclear. [nature.com]

Epidemiology

Pinkston, 2 Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, University of Alabema at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL Search for other works by this author on: Philip Cole Accepted: 22 January 1996 Abstract The etiology of Warthin's tumor, a benign parotid [academic.oup.com]

This activity reviews the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, evaluation, and treatment of Warthin tumor and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in assessing and treating this condition. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Pathophysiology

There is an apparent male predilection for the occurrence of Warthin tumor, although, with the recent reports, the difference in the sex ratio is declining.[9] Pathophysiology Warthin tumor is the only benign neoplasm of salivary glands associated with [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention

Awareness of the various secondary changes that can occur following FNA will help prevent an erroneous interpretation in FNA setting and direct correct management. References 1. Ebbs SR, Webb AJ. [mjmsr.net]
