Presentation

White sponge nevus is a rare, inherited disorder that usually presents as nonpainful white plaque primarily involving the buccal mucosa, gingiva, and palate. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Treatment

There is no treatment, but because this is a benign condition with no serious clinical complications, prognosis is excellent. [en.wikipedia.org]

TREATMENT No treatment is indicated for this benign and asymptomatic condition. Patients may require palliative treatment if the condition is symptomatic. One study has reported some relief of symptoms with a tetracycline rinse. [burketsoralmedicine.blogspot.com]

WSN is an extremely rare cause of vulvar leukoplakia, yet it is important to recognize to allow for appropriate genetic counseling of this autosomal dominant disorder and to avoid misdiagnosis and the potential for subsequent exposure to ineffective treatment [experts.umich.edu]

In the most part of cases, WSN requires no treatment because of its benign and asymptomatic behaviour: up to now, no protocol of treatment for this condition was standardized. [medsci.org]

There is no treatment for White Sponge Nevus. Usually, when doctors first see the characteristics, they try an anti-fungal, but this condition will not respond to such treatment. [slideplayer.com]

Etiology

Considering the low prevalence of this disorder and also of the EEC syndrome, future studies on the etiology of the white sponge nevus might look at the common etiopathogenic aspects of both the white sponge nevus and the EEC syndrome. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
